80hrs a week is illegal. I burn 65 hrs in 5 days hauling fuel locally. If the company you are talking about in WI is the same as one of my mentor's ex students? He was pulling dry bulk tank. Home lots, almost every day, and making more money than Swift. If you go there with your short time behind the wheel you need to hang on to it. Pretty much come Hell or high water. For the other guy up there with a ding on his DAC for refusing to run illegal? There is recourse. There is plenty of info on this site to fix that.
It's more important to be with your family if possible. When you subtract your road expenses, the local pay looks even better.
Those kids are only young once. Don't have any myself. My mutts like me being home. Road expenses are tax deductable. Still need to keep them under control. I need to come up with deductions after this year to keep more of my money.
I have been offered a position. Could start immediatly. I am waiting on swifts decision on what they want from me. I will give 2 weeks if needed. It is how I am wired. On the over 70 hours. I will use most if not all my time every week but they pay hourly anytime I have to wait to deliver. As long as it is not sleeper berth or a true off duty time. Anytime I deliver I am on the clock. So I should make out better than now. Sounds like from DM that swift is short trucks and will want it back asap. Just have to sign a letter saying I am leaving on my own accord. I told him I will only sign that if swift says I offered my 2 weeks and they declined. Have to play the game. I will lat you know how it turns out.
Good luck! Wife and kids should be glad to see you at home! Nothing better than your own bed! GOAL and be careful!
I hope this new job is everything you need and want it to be. You're doing the right thing with Swift. Never slam a door you may need to open again.
Injun. That is exactly what I told my dm. I honestly believe this is best for my family and me. A strong family owned and family like atmosphere. Pay will be a little low and hours long but home most nights. The eguipment is a little older but well maintained. I found the tight transmission and clutch smooth. They already have a reefer load for me. We felt this was a job we couldn't pass up. Swift actually tried to get me to stay but home is too much to pass up.
Hun, I wish I had seen this before you quit. Because I would have had a few considerations to add.. My husband is a "local" driver for a small ag hauling company here in Cali.. During the busiest season, you may or may not sleep in your bed. I cannot count the number of times it was more time efficient for him to simply sleep in his truck rather than drive the half an hour to an hour to get home... He's been so busy recently, I'd rather he were OTR again. At least then I might see him. Remember that home time is no longer a promise. Uninterrupted home time doesn't happen. And if you're running ag, slow means SLOW and sometimes DEAD. I'm not saying you made a bad move. I'm just saying to be prepared for what it means.
We are taking everythinginto our decision. A chance is better than no chance. Talking to the drivers and others. We will have to take them on there word. The company is 15 min from my house. Even if I sree my kids for a half hour a day is better than not at all.
Heading to menasha soon to turn in truck. Kinda bittersweet. Had one of my better weeks of miles. On the other hand not gonna miss talking to a machine more than a human. Defiently gonna miss it a little. Get to go with trhe family to a waterpark and to the chicago museums tonight and tomorrow. Should be a blast. Thanks for everything. Will check in from time to time. Be safe and good luck.
