hi guys, i am a uk hgv truck driver, and i have a question.
i have been told that if i want to work otr in canada, i will need a working visa.
this is not a problem, but i have to get a canadian transport company to employ me first before imigration will give me the visa.
do any truckers on here know of any canadian transport companys willing to give a hard working uk trucker a start.
can anyone also explain to me, why uk truckers are banned from going into the USA.
Seems to me that they dont mind us fighting side by side with them, but not to work with us.

    thanks guys.

    ps.
    fantastic forum you guys have

there are already quite a few threads on this topic. Good luck on getting an lmo as most companies willing to sponser will be ones who want to use you hard and put away wet... And do it for peanuts.
As for the second part we aren't American we are Canadian ... And I bet our odds of getting a job driving truck in the uk pale compared to you getting hired here.

    hello my trucker friend.
i didnt mean to sound off, i just meant that a lot of the jobs in canada want you to go otr into the usa, which i dont mind.
it just seems very hard to get a visa for that country.
anyway, canada where i want to be, i just cant decide which area is best or find the best trucking companys.
there seems to be a lot of owner drivers over there.
thanks for responding my friend, and i am sorry if i seem to have offended you, didnt mean to.
there is a lot of trucking jobs over here at the moment, but they are controlled by agency companys, which are killing the job.

you have a nice day, and drive carefull my friend, and we will chat again soon.

Its not a visa. Its an work permit you need.
Also a company would need to obtain an LMO (labour market opinion) in order to hire you from the UK.
This is not hard given the current driver shortage and really just requires the company to prove that they have been unable to find a suitable Canadian to fill the job.
I do not know why you think that you would be unable to run Stateside. I pull a reefer and mostly haul down to Texas, Arizona and California and am from Yorkshire!

The only thing that would stop you from hauling in and out of the US is a criminal record or a failed drugs test.
Your problem is finding a decent company to help you emigrate. I originaly came over in 2007 to haul flat deck for Big freight sytems, Steinbach Mb.
Unfortunatley they no longer hire from overseas as far as i know.
I would definitely say that Manitoba is the best province regards long haul jobs but I couldn't say if any of the companies still recruit from abroad.
I think Flying Eagle out of Niverville took on a couple of Brits this year.
There are a few companies out in the maritime provinces ( New Brunswick and PEI ) who might be interested but I believe pay rates are poor and Eastern companies tend to run mainly just Eastern Canada and the New England States.
H & R over in Alberta definitely still recruit from overseas but I have heard that they have a massive turnover of drivers with guys some coming over only to return to the UK poorer and wiser.
Remember that until you become a permanent resident of Canada and no longer need a work permit it is hard to change employers so you are basically stuck with your conditions unless you go back to the UK.
I guess it stands to reason that a company that needs to recruit drivers from half way round the world is unlikely to be the best company to work for.
I do not know what your circumstances are but if it was me I would get out here to Manitoba for a recce trip with your resume and references, criminal record check, etc and visit as many long haul companies as time will allow and also take the opportunity to check out the life here in general. I could give you the names of plenty of decent companies out here in Manitoba that might be interested in talking to you but it is doubtfull that they would reply to emails or letters sent from the UK.
    Good luck.

Texas, Arizona, and California? That's the kind of runs im looking for, I have reefer experience. Would you mind saying what company and Province you're coming from?
