    Hello All,

I've read this thread and still have a question... Those of you who have driven without a DOT all over the US, did you have to at least have an MC Authority to do so? I haul large items people buy at out of state auctions back to them and I use my Under 10,000lb GVWR Honda Pilot with a small enclosed trailer occasionally. What would I need to do to be compliant at the Federal level?

Sounds like you might even need a DOT number even if your GCWR is less than 10,000 lbs. That's just one or the requirements. Another is any for hire motor carrier which it sounds like you are.

So the only thing you would not need is a CDL, med card, drug testing and likely inspections. Everything else a semi owner op needs, you do too.

Thanks for the reply ZVar. I do this hauling on the side and only every once in a while. As a college student who is trying to make ends meet when I'm not studying or in class, I'm not sure I'll be able to afford any kind of carrier insurance, as well as the MC + DOT numbers.

There's no alternative path of action for the student hauling as a side job? haha

Bottom line is I'd like to keep hauling state to state every once in a while to make some extra cash, but I'm not able to commit to being a legit carrier. Any advice?
