I’m not arguing for or against brokers. I’m not even a motor carrier as most people here know already. It’s the hypocrisy of the argument that drives me nuts. In one breath truckers will say the government needs to leave us alone and in the next breath say the government needs to step in and help me.

I’ve yet to see a valid argument how transparency will put more money in Joe’s pocket. Brokers are salesman, they are business people. You want to cap their profit on a load what do you think will happen? Brokers won’t go away. You won’t get that extra money on the load. The load will pay you exactly the same or less, the broker will take his allowed 15%, then they’ll get a kickback from the shipper because in the end he’s still getting the load moved. Dealing with truckers is a headache that the majority of companies don’t want to deal with, that’s why their traffic departments have gone away.

Instead of wanting to regulate profit maybe look at other avenues of the broker model to try and make go away. What if factoring companies didn’t exist? What if quick pay didn’t exist? What if fuel advances didn’t exist? I would argue that those services keep people afloat and could possibly affect rates more than telling another business they can only make 15% profit. How many people would become a carrier knowing that they needed 30 to 60 days of fuel money to run on? 30 to 60 days of money in the bank for all of their other bills?

just one quick formal thing, because I need to go to work.
15% capping is not 15% profit.
they get to keep 15% from every rate confirmation...ok?
The load today: I get paid $900 of what I deliver today - they must have ...hmm...$1500 on it.
I should be getting $1275, their cut is $225. It looks .... healthier, doesn't it?

Or you could sell your services better or negotiate better to get the $1275 you feel you deserve or you don’t haul it. Capping their commission is capping their profits whether you choose to see it that way or not. You want the government to help you see a number on a piece of paper and that number will change before it puts more money in your pocket.

If you think the government will come up with a reasonable solution to your perceived problem then maybe look back and see how we ended up with the 30 minute break we have to take.

    People...

The regulations already exist to ensure transparency. However, you'll have to sue to get the data you seek IF you are demanding it comes from the broker. They will NEVER change. Nothing is going to change.

If you want what's best for carriers, then carriers need to come together, on their own, and discuss openly their rates. THEN, each of us can see where we stand. Maybe I've been undercutting a carrier because I simply don't know what I should have been charging. It's not on purpose.

IF we can share our rates, as carriers, then "we" can do better for ourselves and one another.

As shown by some members here, they will never share anything they do. They think everyone is out to take from them. That's gotta suck, to live thinking everyone is out to get you.

It doesn't matter what the brokers are making if "we" carriers communicate rates for different lanes. Then we would have legit quantitative data. Businesses constantly change their prices according to their competition. That's how a market works.

Here's the problem: until carriers release their own rates, you won't know anything. IF brokers did tell you what they made, they won't tell you what I made. Therefore, what good is it to know how much they took from you (if that's how you view it). You could be the cheapest carrier in that lane and not even know, even with the broker sharing what they made on your load. For example, broker A makes $100 off of your load but only $10 from every other carrier in that lane. NOW, you know what they made but how does change what you'd charge the shipper directly if they call you?

We need a carrier consortium app where we can have thousands of carrier sharing legit numbers with one another and then we can be better prepared when negotiating with shippers and brokers.

Joe, this business won't ever change enough to make you happy. Never. If I were you I'd open a 7-11 store or something where you had more control of your costs.
Trucking isn't ever going to work for you. Your expectations are unrealistic.

The regulations don’t exist the way Joe wants them to. He wants to know up front what the load pays from the shipper because he feels he would be able to negotiate better. He doesn’t want to have to file a lawsuit after the fact.

His expectations are for people to have some ethics. That's not unrealistic. He is insane to think anything will ever provoke a salesman to consider something other than the bottom line for themselves.

How is it unethical if the broker can get a load hauled for a rate no matter the spread between what he pays and what he is paid? Suggesting a cap on commission is a road that I can’t fathom any business owner wanting to go down.

My issue isn’t with Joe personally, it’s the argument in general and the hypocrisy of how and when it happens. Start of Covid and that group was in DC protesting broker this and broker that, but they all seem to disappear and shut up when they could trip and fall into a $4 a mile load. Now that everyone ran out and bought trucks and the market has swung the other way it’s back to broker this and broker that.
