ok I've been driving for an independent contractor for about a month and a half. It's been going on but the thing is the guy is paying me under the table. Straight cash and while that's ok for a while I know eventually if I wanna go somewhere and work for another company I need to be able to verify that I've actually driven. Since I'm working the ports I figure if be able to take pictures of my tickets and that would do the trick but I'm not sure. I'm already certain I don't wanna work here forever so I'm not sure if I should just try and get on with another company or ? I'm thinking of trying robertsons ready mix. Like I said the money where I'm at now is decent but I wanna build a career not just work

Take the insurance policy # and call the insurance company for a letter of experience.

But I would think that if the guy is paying you under the table that you won't be on the insurance policy.
Other than pay stubs and the insurance letter can't see any company excepting photos of gate or port receipts.

Well I had to send a copy of my license and twic to him to be put on the insurance. But he's still paying me cash which is weird I think. Can I still do what you said if that's the case?

Get the insurance policy # and call the insurance company.

But be aware that if you r not listed on the insurance policy and call u could cause problems for yourself.

Just put him down on job application and the new company will call and verify. Don't get too worked up about it.

Hope you don't get hit with a 1099. A "friend" did that for me for a while, (cash) then "WHAM", 1099. Shouldn't matter, experience is experience, no matter how you are paid.

A 1099 is the surprise you get at the end of the year after being paid cash, when the boss gets done talking with their accountant.

Claical, if you are being paid "under the table," you are leaving yourself open for some major problems with the government. If you are being paid under the table, then your boss is not paying for social security, worker's compensation insurance, or any thing else that he is, by LAW, required to pay. Including with holdings from your earnings to pay the matching funds on these taxes.
If he does, (and he will,) issue you a 1099 form at the end of the year, it means YOU will be responsible for all of the taxes owed on your salary. This is just a dodge by your employer to get out of paying his share of the taxes on his employees.

I am guessing that you are not from the U.S. Many employers will take advantage of a foreigner, (particularly one who is here illegally,) by ignoring all labor laws. If you are not among this group, there is no reason why you should work like this.

Your butt is hanging out a mile here. Find a decent employer.
