OK, sorry, I just saw "undocumented worker" sticking out all over your posts there. But then I've jumped to wrong conclusions before. . .(guess I'll never learn.)
Anyway, the rest of what I posted still applies. (Those same companies that take advantages of the illegal laborers also take full advantage of rookies...)

Just make sure you verify with the boss that the "under the table" is "off the books". As in that he will not surprise you at the end of the year. I worked for a friend like that for 2 months and decided that it's not worth it for me as far taxes goes. Since I worked for only 2 months we made a agreement to kind of just walk away and don't report at the end of the year.

Hope you never have to use his insurance . He will quickly report the truck stolen, there is no record of you working for him.

Everybody needs drivers. Find a different job. I work in sw mn and can think of three trucking companies I drove by in the last two days that had signs up looking for drivers. I wasn't even looking either. If it was his idea it's benefiting him more than you.

If the boss does go the 1099 route, you better be prepared to pay around 35% of your earnings in taxes (25% or more just to the federal government alone). If you've been spending all your earnings (like most people do), you could easily end up owing 5 figures with no way to pay the bill.

Real talk: I took a second job last year that was under the table and I'll always regret it.

I went from below the poverty line, to just above it, but when tax time came around, I owed the government more money than I had earned working that second job.

I worked 7 days a week, 80+ hours, working outdoor markets, box truck deliveries, office work, and some local CSA programs.

Basically, under the table only works in highschool, on a strictly black market kind of way.

Save every penny, because you'll be giving it right back in April.

I would contest it if they did. If he is giving you checks with no taxes taken out expect a 1099 but if he is giving you actual cash how can he prove what he paid you or be accurate about it?

He could say he gave you 20k and he only gave you 10k. No paper trail with cash.
