Good point, Snowwy. There are services out there that will help you get that done, if it can be, though they'll charge something for it. (That whole "nothing's free" rule, ya know...) But we had a couple people in my recent grad class who are also needing to look into that to help clean off some past charges that are haunting them now, and they're from over 10 yrs ago! If there is even the barest hint of a background, save for minor traffic stuff, they won't want to touch you, OR they'll take complete advantage of you. You'll get a better deal if you can get it clean, for sure.

Best of luck to you in that.

You might try a smaller local company where you can speak directly to the owner and tell them your story. Once you have a year under your belt with the company, you should be good to go with just about anyone so long as your record stays clean. There are thousands of independent haulers out there looking for drivers. I have to believe if you are willing to work, you will find a job.

Henderson trucking moved out of Salem to Caseyvill IL and and that was the first company I applied for they turn me down and said find a job any kind and work there for 6mos and then they would consider me for hire .... but I work very hard for two months in the cold freezing rain and snow to just turn around and go flip burgers for 6 mos. LOL

In answer to the topic title, however, the biggest thing you can do for that is to not get into that boat to start with. And yes, with the current state of things, that's easier said than done, but it can be done. Even being self-employed to some degree (that can at least be proven on paper) is preferable to not working at all for more than 3 months. Usually, most places will overlook a period of up to 3 months of unemployment as "to be expected" in hardship cases. But go beyond that, and they generally want to see that you were indeed looking for work or trying to make something happen -- otherwise, they might view you as a potential risk or less-than-ideal-employee. To that end, it's just like one of the steps in the Smith System.... "Leave yourself an out"; put more into context, always have an ear to the ground, don't unnecessarily burn bridges, and keep looking for better opportunities. Should the worst come to pass, you'll have options.

I wish you much luck in your search, friend. Put your best foot forward, speak with honesty and purpose, and never sacrifice your honor or integrity.

Well....hmmm....like my trainer told me that CDL is good forever unless you screw it up. So maybe you might have to do something else for 6 months. How about Beelman...you call them yet? There are some container haulers out that way...maybe work the dock at an LTL? Don't let one thing blind you.

That DUI is over 15 years old. That will only be an issue with the top companies, and since you're new you need not to worry about that. If you have stable work before your two years of unemployment you should be ok too. The ecomomy hasn't been friendly to many and they'll take that into consideration.

that's what I was thinking my DUI back in '97 shouldn't be a problem it was so long ago heck I don't even drink anymore I was young and dumb back in 97 and I did have a solid work history I starting driving a van for the railroad in '98 driving them across the states loved doing it and it lasted till they laid me of in 2012 I started with them in as a dispatcher in 1993.

The DUI is still an issue for some. It was long ago but some companies don't ever want a DUI. Check each place for requirements. Millis may take you on, they have a terminal in Streator, at least they did when I was there. Good luck to you and clean your head up and your nose clean!
