I am about to install a Uniden Pro510XL in a Ford van.. exciting I know.. I checked the transmit into a dummy load and found 2.5 watts carrier. It is tuned right, there does not seem to be a malfunction. I thought it was a regular 4 watt radio. Maybe the final is weak for some reason, previous abuse, etc.. The cheap Workman meter swings to 10W on it when giving it a whistle. I did not check using a proper meter or a scope. I'm concerned about the 'low' output, thinking it should make a 4W carrier, not 2.5W.
Has anyone else checked the actual output of one of these things known to be good?
Also, I can only find the 510E manual/schematic, not the 510XL. These are different. Is there a good schematic fr the 510XL? The 510E PDF schematic from cbtricks has a mess in the RF output area as well.

the FCC rules have the radios locked at a legal max of 4 watts output on AM, and i think its 12 max on sideband. you can have any amount of meters show anything. no two are the same. they might be close to reading the same, but exact, no.

I don't think it's uncommon to find radios with something like 2.5-3 watts coming out. Since not all 2 radios are alike, oftentimes one might do a little more than the next, so the manufacturer has to set the radios to not exceed the 4 watt rule just in case the feds want to do an audit. Also it could be your meter reading.
With that said, I recently had a Pro 510 XL on my bench. Bone stock it was doing 2.5 watts dead key and like 5-6 watts modulation. Pathetic I know.
If it's an older 510 (Philippines model), all you have to do to get the deadkey up, is adjust the L6 pot at the rear of the radio. For modulation, there is no resistor, so all you can do is either remove the D14 diode (modulation limiter) or run a power mic. After both of these mods were done, I was able to get the radio to do nearly 4 watts deadkey and 10 watts modulation. -
mine does 10 or 12 dead key, depending on which meter you read. It's been a nice little radio, i used it for 9 years before getting bigger radios. But now i wish i had gotten a cobra 29 a lot sooner.

The rose colored meter? Or rose colored glass face in meter?

No my rat shack meter and the meter at the shop that checked it last !

i have no idea, if i don't really care. That's what it said and my rat shack swr says about the same.

much of the error is due to dirty outputs and a filter cleans that up -
Thats nice, do you have a point to make ? i seen it do 10 watts on two meters and so i believe it, unless you got some way to prove that i am lying or somehow am mistaken... i suggest you sing or get off the stage !
Otherwise we are done talking ! Are you succumbing to Channel Jumper syndrome ?
