What can we do? With all the information available here and elsewhere about companies like that we could not go to work for them in the first place.

If they didn’t have the paperwork on that trailer then I would’ve refused to haul it. The trailer could’ve been stolen for all we know- and checking to make sure the registration is in order is actually part of a pre-trip. Did you tell the company about it BEFORE you hooked up to that trailer and left?

So you conspired to commit tax fraud by accepting a 1099 position and you are shocked they treat you the same way?

    Regarding documents.
Our managment is clueless when it comes to licensing, registration and insurance.
Rank and file had mentioned that our insurance cards(trucks and trailers) expire on October 1.
Was told that "corporate" would surely take care of it by then.
Boss went bird hunting in SD over the weekend so I just ran the trucks knowing they had no proof of insurance.
Come Monday of this week some of the more senior members came to work and refused to take any equipment on to any public roads.
    Boss nearly had a coronary..
Told us we had to run the equipment. Steward basically told him to pi** up a rope.
    Some ran and some didn't.
Plant manager in haste printed up our hazmat license and said run...lol
Other boss came back Tuesday and scrambled to get proper insurance cards in the trucks.

As a driver you are responsible for up to date paperwork in your possession.
Not for acquiring it but having available.
Part of your pretrip is making sure you have all required documents up to date.
Check the dates for expiration. Some are permanent, some have fleet coverage. Even though we are self insured we are still required to show annual updated proof.
If not you are technically illegal and subject to fine. But not from the company..lol
It will be reflected on your psp and companies csa if ticketed.

User666, Lonesome and mjd4277 Thank this.

Hazmat rated carriers don’t mess around(my company is one of them). We’re required to get our trucks inspected in the safety lanes at a terminal at least every 45 days at the latest. One of the first things that is checked is the insurance, registration and permit folder. ANY permits that are expiring(especially the alcohol permits) are replaced/updated,insurance cards are checked (we’re self-insured) and the registration (both for tractor and trailer) are checked, and typically that’s before the actual inspection on tractor trailer itself.

No thanks to New York State especially I hound my company for the Highway Use Tax(HUT) sticker which is supposed to be mounted on the front of the truck. That state is doing a HARD ENFORCEMENT now for that(they’re not accepting the paperwork stating it was paid for-they want to see the actual sticker mounted on the truck).

We regularly put units OOS because the company hasn't devised a datebase or system to keep track of annual federal inspections and then asks the drivers why they refused a unit assignment..

Well they are thieves but honestly you should have known that. You have been a member here since 2013. There are countless stories about Chicago 1099 companies on here, and most don't end well. I would say all but there might be 1 or 2 successes. Also almost all of them end with the driver's last check being retained by the company.
