There is always a catch. Nothing is truly free. You will pay for it one way or another.

Though,.. for someone with kids I could see locking it down to 480p with free streaming being an acceptable alternative.

I'll chime in. Yes it's true. The binge on is a complete scam and a way to trick the customers. What t-mobiles doing is throttling all video that they can recognize as video to 480p. I thought it was 420p. What they call DVD quality. If you have a low tiered plan it's not that bad for being able to watch hulu and netflix without going over your data. Similar to music freedom.

T-Mobile hasn't been as transparent as they should have been and it was also opt-out not in which rightfully pissed people off. T-mobile wants it on so those that don't know won't overload their network as much. Living in a city for most of my life and family having ATT I know ATT gets overloaded in some cities and data goes slow or comes and goes. The benefit for those who have unlimited is you can use your 14gb of tethering data to tether your phone to a laptop, phone, tablet, or whatever. And as long as your watching one of the video partners from binge on it doesn't count against your tethering data. So you can tether as much as you need to for the important stuff and "binge" on streaming services. Also a free Vudu movie a month is very nice. Those are the two benefits for unlimited customers.

And yes it's true t-maybe doesn't have the best coverage. A year or two ago it was beyond crap. I left them when I was on the road and went to verizon. Things have changed for the better though. They bought some of verizon's spectrum a few years ago and it got deployed sometime early last year I think. What that means is alot of areas that had crap or no t-mobile service or just unused towers got upgraded to full 4g lte...errr VOLTE even in areas that aren't big cities. I've even been in some areas where I didn't get reception with ATT that t-mobile now has. That's very few though. The point is it's a lot better. There is a catch to their VOLTE coverage. It's best to just "google T-mobile VOLTE phones"

Pretty much any T-Mobile phone you buy that's carrier branded from the store like a samsung galaxy will have VOLTE in it and have it activated. The problem and tricky part comes with unlocked phones. The Moto E LTE (Second Gen) had VOLTE for a very short while but t-mobile told motorola to cut it off. Because of their weird E-911 thing they are making it very hard for unlocked manufactuers to get approval. T-Mobile has the final say.

Nexus 6 took a while to get it. The Moto X Pure Edition (2015) didn't have it at first but it came with marshmellow. The blackberry priv has it. Although t-mobile is getting a variant of that soon. I think the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X have it it took them a while to get it I think it was in 6.1 that they got it. Also...iPhones have them. I think the unlocked iPhone 6 Plus. On that note The Nexus 6, 6P, 5X, MXPE, and iPhone 6 Plus (maybe other iphone variants I don't keep track) HAVE EVERY BAND. Meaning you can pop a verizon sim, t-mobile, att, sprint, boost, straight talk or whatever and it will work nice. I really hope unlocked and universal band phones get bigger. They benefit drivers so much. So if you get one of those and t-mobile doesn't work for you, it's fine you can go to verizon or wherever. But that's binge on in a little more detail and unlocked phones and more...

I have T-Mobile. Coverage is great as long as you don't plan on driving through Wyoming or the southwest desert region.

"All detectable video typically streams at DVD quality (480p+) with Binge On."

480p+ I suppose means that the lowest resolution you can get is 640*480, and streaming services that are more bandwidth friendly will stream higher resolution.

And yes, it does carry over to any device you have tethered via Wi-Fi or USB.
