unpaid down time ??

    how is it possible for trucking companies NOT to pay for break down time? I need to "give them" 1.5 hours before pay begins? wtf?

    Every company I worked for the breakdown pay started the minute the breakdown occurred. What ever time I logged it, whether on paper log or elog, that's when the pay started.

    It is possible because there are enough drivers willing to give the company the first XX hours for free.

    To be honest if there were other advantages to working for such a company I would overlook a reasonable amount of "free" breakdown.

    Everything in life is a compromise of sorts.

    It is like detention time. Each company has their own rules...1 hour,2 hours free...whatever.
    Most places just pay if the truck is down over night then it is some BS pay like 100 bucks. That is after you set at a dealer all day for free.
    These are things you need to ask before hiring on with any company.

    I have been broke down in a shop all day...Then the truck gets fixed and they consider the day in the shop was your 10 hour break then expect you to run all night!
    NOT fun after being in a little waiting room all ##### day!

    When I quit driving over the road few years ago and started driving local and paid by the hour, I looked forward getting paid for all my time..............funny thing is the 2 local companies I've worked for, maintain their equipment so well and their contracts with suppliers are so iron clad, I have never had an hour of detention. Traffic is the only thing that slows us down.

    P.S After I say this, tomorrow I will have a tire problem;)

    What do you want, 0.38 per mile + detention time or breakdown pay or pick and drops whatever or .45 per mile with no other pay, at end of year you make same amount and you look at it and size it up if it was worth it or not.

    My time is worth something. The moment I show up to work till I go home I'm getting paid. No different than the office staff. It's been a problem a couple of times and I talked to the boss about it and it was resolved to my satisfaction. Nobody else works for free there and neither do I. If it becomes a problem I can go make money for somebody else in a company truck. Pay me well for the work I do and we all make money. F me around and I'll leave.

    The company is paid to move the load from point A to point B. You are paid to move the Truck carrying the load from point A to point B. The truck doesn't move...nobody gets paid. Pretty simple.

    If you don't like it...buy your own truck. Then you'll STILL be not getting paid while it's in the shop AND paying for repairs.

    I trade a portion of my life, time, for money. Learned quickly after starting otr it just doesn't add up, was giving way too much of my time away for nothing in return. You might be comfortable with it, which is good because they need someone to fill those seats, but I never was.
