Why are we still 102” before permit $$$ needed? Lanes often 12’. Often stuff should be bit wider but permit issues they cut it down. At one time I was a EMT. We had narrow backboards. I questioned it as less comfortable, secure for patients. The *reason*. Often Dr. did not want patient removed until DR. Confident of patient injuries. Trama ER was 100 miles away. Rather then wait to get our board back we left, grabbed spare. They shipped it back. If it’s was IIRC over 17” wide it was much more expensive.
My thinking 9’ wide load should be legal. If 10’ you need to have red/orange flags outside edges. 8’6” is so dang narrow. Long as it can be safely secured on trailer.

Too many morons hauling permit loads now. I'm terrified when I think about more of them speeding, bobbing and weaving through traffic like they're in a four wheeler. If anything, the permitting process should be more stringent instead of relaxed.

Yes, let’s make it easier for every mouth breather to haul permit loads without a permit because that won’t have any negative effects at all.

It’s all about the money. They don’t care if a guy is wearing flip flops or just got his license yesterday. If he pays the permit feet they’re happy. And it’s most definitely not about fixing the roads. I’ve hauled many 16’ wide loads but under weight. It’s a cash grab.

What if I have a permit but am unable to read it? Should I be able to run it?

Yep it’s a way to make more money. To fine a person if load sticks out an inch. *possibly settling*. I see a guy on flatbed using 2” ratchet straps, chains TRYING to shift load that is sticking out SLIGHTLY beyond rub rail in one place. “It was half inch inside when chained down”. Driver is attempting to move it.
Who has mirrors outside width under 9’? ANYONE? *ok on semi tractor, not your wife’s car*

Only if you're able to do so with one foot on the dash.
