Well this is the week that I become an A seat driver, and I'm too excited!! Just passed my skills test on the simulator with flying colors, and now i Have to attend a weeks worth of classes before I can get my truck. I talked to my fleet manager today about the need for a good gps system and a cb radio, and he stated that i could go to the Prime store and get one...Didnt know that they had gps systems there. Are the gps systems there of any good value. Yes, I'm going to get an atlas too but I would really like a trucker GPS.:biggrin_2556:

There will be other things you need to get as well. Check w/ your FM about what you can "put on account" to be taken out weekly and what you have to pay for outright.

Most of the things in that store you can buy elsewhere much cheaper. But once you have a truck number assigned you can charge anythingin the store to that truck and while come out of your paycheck in small incriments.

Cb you really don't need a great one. Most people these days don't use them on the road. Just good for shippers/recievers that use them to call your dock number/ and for traffic congestions.

Gps I personally use a car tomtom, I don't use it for directions at all. It's basicly there to give me an estimate of time left to drive, and a headsup on upcoming street names. I haven't tried the trucker gps's so I don't know if therre much better.

Mike...when did you start? I am hoping to start my training at Prime about the 2nd week of Dec...but with 40k mikes ahead of me......what does it take? 4 months? So...with class time, home time....I'm probably looking at May before I get a truck? BTW....congratulations.

I have a Rand Mcnally TND 510. It works really well. Bought it at a T/A for 299. I still use my atlas, the GPS is just another tool for me.

That 40,000 miles includes the 10,000 miles credit if you go through the PSD phase. Once you get your CDL then you do 30,000 with a trainer. could take as little as around 6 weeks. All depends on how much you roll

JCW rolled out on July 28thish, and hit his 40k Sept 29. Included in that is a whole week of downtime in Detroit due to a busted radiator.

If you buy a Rand McNally 510 or 710 GPS unit, call their Customer Service and ask about the lifetime map upgrades. You'll want to do that. Check it out:

    Rand McNally Trucking
FREE LIFETIME MAPS are now being offered when you purchase a new IntelliRoute TND 510 or 710! Offer is valid at any participating Pilot, Flying J, Wilco, TA, Petro or Love's travel center and is good through December, 2011!! For more details, visit http://trucking.randmcnally.com/
