What you guys think? Good Idea or not? I have a Volvo D12D 395 HP. Pulling light a lot (30,000 or less). But when I cant find loads 30,000 or less, i'm stuck with 40,000 pounds or more. I don't want to kill my engine for an extra $300. So I think going to 435 HP will help. But, is it a good idea? Any problems in the future? MPG decrease? (Averaging 6.4 carrying 20,000)

    Here's the engine: http://www.wheelingtruck.com/pdf/D12D395_VN.pdf

Depends on your gearing, type of trailer you pull and the terrain you drive.

I think the move from 1450 lb-ft to 1550 lb-ft will make more difference. Its the power under the curve not the peak that makes the difference. I think it will improve the performance of the truck.

I dont really know Volvos so I dont know what the differences are other than more fuel above 1100 rpm. One may have a better timing map which can effect fuel mileage. If you make use of the extra power all the time it will hurt fuel mileage. If you just use it to help reduce downshifts in pulls it may help.

be carefull! 420 HP and higher D12D was with articulated pistons, 380-400 HP engines may be with cast aluminium pistons and check it first.

If you upgrade ECM rating up to 430-460 HP cast pistons will be damaged with exessive heat in the first trip, especially in mountains ore if you haul a lot of stuff in trailer. So check what pistons you have by VIN ore engine number you have!

When I was young and silly I did D12A reprogranning from 380 to 420 and 460 HP and got this problem, and now I know that pistons and piston cooling springles must be done!

Its not for the 40 hp its for the 100 lb-ft of torque.
