Either one would be a good career choice for you Racer26..both are great jobs. Only really big difference would be in the food service job you'll be finger-printing your loads for the most part. Both are home most every night with great pay/benefits/retirement.....just depends on what "you" want to do. I did the food service deal at GSF for 3 decades and survived til I retired ...it can be done.

My coworker had an interview with them and was offered a job (he declined). Around here, he said you're pretty much on call for the first year or so, come in when guys go on vacation, call in sick etc.

When you work "on call" like that, would I still get decent hours with a sporadic schedule, or would it just be completely random? I just don't want to get into a position where I'm only getting a couple hundred a week.

Depends on the workload. This can only be answered by UPS, and it's likely to vary from one yard to another.

A lot of long term employees at my local UPS DC are taking retirement. Word is the deal for new employees isn't as sweet as it has been. The high pay and pensions and benefits are fine until it's time to pay the piper. I think UPS has figured out they can get drivers to do it for $50K a year instead of $90K a year.

Don't know. I'm not really into the union thing. I just know a friend that used to work for overnight. He just tells me they counted all their time as if they were at ups and every 10 years equals a grand a month. He also told me he wishes it was still overnight and non union. I didn't know anything about the private funded stuff. I thought they were still union.

That is true they still belong to the Teamsters but the last few years they do not participate in the National pension fund. They are now privately funded by UPS. There are some Union locals that do not contribute to the National pension fund, they have their own local fund, Chicago is one that comes to mind.

Thanks everyone again for the help! Been off here a couple days, and been busy looking into the position. Here's the deal. If I got hired on into the position, I was told I would be the 2nd guy in line on the "extra board" for right now. I am roughly familiar with how the extra board works in general, but wasn't sure how it was in a "real world" situation. Is it likely I will get steady loads, or do most "extra boards" get stuck on the dock for months (or years) for most of the time?

And I know this is heavy on personal debate and opinion, but is UPS a company that I should try to get my foot in the door any way possible with the long term in mind?
For instance, if I was offered the job, is it worth putting up with working the dock for possibly months on end working up to a "high seniority" driver, or would it be best to go with a company that I would be able to drive for right off the bat?

    Thanks!!!

the question you need ask yourself is if you want to be gone for days at a time, or home every morning or night.
UPS is a good option if you favor the latter
