I was just wondering for all you UPS drivers out there, how much does the average tractor trailer driver make, and how much would a senior driver make? i read an estimation of what they make but that was about this time last year so i dont know if its the same. i think i want to work at UPS when i finish high school and work my way up and end up driving trucks for em. So please give me some information on UPS!

Your best be is to find someone at a local ups location not a ups store as they are privately owned. -
The Transport topics website yesterday had an article that UPS was going to cut salaries. Didn't say for whom.

i applied at ups once for a driving position. they told me that you have to start as a packer working overnights loading out the trailers. (and they want u to pack out somewhere around 400 packages an hr) they were gonna start me at 8.50/hr. i basically told them where they can stuff their job, cause 8.50 in NY after taxes just aint worth it. i can get more on unemployment. and even if u get hired as a delivery driver the situation aint much better, i know a driver and he said it used to be a great company to work for, but now they try to push their drivers wayyyy too much. hes trying now to get into their big rigs but he said the guys that get those jobs keep em for a lonnnnggg time. just giving u some info that ive heard, but try anyway, whats the worst that can happen, you decide not to work for them?

yeah i hear ya... i was also wondering how UPS tractor trailer drivers do what they do without goin over their HOS. i know UPS has like next day deliveries and stuff like that so drivers gotta work hard to get loads to where they need to get on time so how do you do that legally?

Now might not be the best time to join UPS economy is down freight is down which means volumes are down. They do hire feeder drivers off the road I think it is like 1 for every 5 inside moving up, seasonal is different rules you are only there for christmas after that see ya. If things were better in the world you would probably walk on after christmas, but they will be laying people off in starting January. Feeder drivers will move back to package delivery and package drivers will move back to loading. Pay ranges from 8.50 to 10.50 depending on what you do in loading, package delivery starts 14.50 tops out at close to 30 an hour after 2.5 years. Hope you like hard work everything in UPS is timed down to the second and I mean everything and yes expect to do 150 to 200 hundred stops a day not packages but stops depending on your route. They are going to get the money worth out of you its all about numbers at UPS nothing else matters. They can track down where ever you are GPS in the DIAD brown gizmo people sign for their packages that you have where ever you go. You are now fighting a computer that says you can do this many stops when you actually know you can do this many safely and be in before cutoff, you can't stay out all night they aren't making money paying you time and half. If you do get hired on don't be a hero going runnin your butt off skippin lunch, do it by the book how you were taught and you will be safe break the rules and kiss your butt goodbye if something goes wrong. There was a driver 26 years with UPS, signed for a package for his customer left it got busted and was terminated lost his pension and killed himself shortly after (God bless his wife and kids).
Do not get hurt on the Job if you do first thing you do is get your own doctor not theirs and consult an attorney right away. If you still join make sure it not a right to work state because the union does not do much for you either except maybe bennies. They are not the mafia of old days they are business trying to make money and they make money on you to. If you are in a right to work state stay out of the union I see no reason in paying 75 dollars a month when legally they have represent you anyway (these days 75 dollars adds up) If you can put up with this and a lot more for 25 to 30 years get out with out doing damage to your body (good luck on that one). In all I think UPS is a good company they have been around for over 100 hundred years they now what they are doing, they are one of the few companys left with a triple AAA crediting rating.
Good luck to you if you make it on or if you make it into retirement with them. For more info from drivers themselfs look for browncafe on the internet.

I worked for UPS quite a few years ago but from the people I know who still work there, things have not changed much.
First, their union contract states somehtthing to the affect 90-95% of full time positions are first opted to internal candidates........(meaning part-time employees have first shot) If I remember correctly UPS has the largest amount of prat-time employees in the world. When I worked there their was a waiting list of p/t employees for those f/t positions.
Second, for Kiezer........The company requires strict qualifications for tractor trailer drivers ie: age, CDL history, work history etc.
If this is your dream however, my suggestion would be to take one of the part-time package handler jobs at your loacal hub. They offer full medical benefits for p/t employees and this will allow you the opurtunity to drive the T/T if you still want.
They have profit sharing 401k etc. It is a good company to work for but you have to work your way in and up. I think with the problems DHL is having that UPS will see some growth soon. UPS has done an excellent job with productivity and streamlining their operation.
Good luck and hang in their, remember you have long time to get where you need and want to be for what is your best interest. -
thanks a lot for the info guys
