By 'road atlas' you mean those large and cumbersome books.

The cannot make a road atlas that could come close to Google Maps on a smart phone.

I can look at it while I drive. Zoom in and even go 'satalite' view.

I agree with you 110 % about not relying completely on a GPS. I trust my exwife more than I do the Rand McNally TND-720 that I got.

Wait wait. Let's not be telling anyone, especially rookie drivers, to use their cell phone in any capacity while driving other than as a gps while it's mounted. Always remember that it's illegal to use your cellphone while operating a commercial vehicle, unless it's hands free.

Use your gps, atlas, moon rocks, gypsy crystals, sextant, compass, cb, stranger on the street, call the shipper/receiver, ask dispatch, ask another driver, google maps, apple maps, scout, waze, inrix, Qualcomm, and anything else you can to do your job. I use almost all the above on a daily basis. Never hit a low bridge yet. Been in a couple bad roads when I tried to second guess my rand McNally gps but that's neither here nor there.

The Flying J on Britannia Road (Britannia and Dixie Rd) should have some there. They're overpriced but the only other option I can think of is Best Buy or Future Shop, but they normally accommodate cars only.

A city atlas would be good as well, but I don't even bother using one. I just use a little $30 TomTom and my own wits. Just be sure to have a good story if you get caught on a restricted road, but you'll probably be fine.

You should check out the app called smart truck route. It's powered by teletype. I have it installed on a 7-inch tablet mounted 2 my visor. Also have an old Garmin 540 (keep the maps updated) which is pretty much indestructible but has gotten me in a bind or two. Pretty much always double check a trip with the atlas. I don't know how we ever got by with an atlas, a quarter for a phone call and a CB radio. Good Times

My trainer in '08 for FFE had a the latest GPS at the time. Even being a new driver I was amazed at how he was so infatuated with it. We kept doing circles around some po dunk town in Indiana. I didnt want to be a smart ### and call him out but right then I knew it was better to learn the old way. I only used a make book 3 years OTR and had zero issues. I would say to new guys all it does is prolong your maping skills and are truly unnecessary.
