I would find out how much freight goes in and out of your area unless home time is not an issue for you. Make sure to check benefits and incentives for extra things as in pay and 401k. I would go with a carrier that best fits your needs and as time goes on and you gain experience more doors with open up to you. Best of luck and stay safe

hey brother, im starting CDL school here in a few weeks and the guy thats working directly with me told me as a tip, its not where you haul, its WHAT you haul, and he said from the 30 years he has been driving, all companies are the same in the way they pay, benefits and treat people, yea there are some slight differences in pay here and there for overall across the board they are mostly the same just with different names, and he said everybody has to start out somewhere, our first year will be rough for sure but he said once you get that year experience, go out and get your tanker and hazmat endorsements and start hauling fuel, oil, liquid asphalt and stuff like that, most of those jobs start around $60k per year with 5 days a week work schedules, excellent benefits and you can be home every night and weekends and make more than your typical OTR jobs where you are gone for weeks at a time with hardly no home time and away from family, yea the money is good but family comes first, unfortunately im in the same boat as you are and my family and I will suck it up for one year but when i get that year im gone to haul tankers near home. Not only that but also look into food companies like MBM, US FOODS as well, those jobs require to unload your own freight but you also have the potential to make between $50k and $70k if you work hard enough for it, and the good thing is everyday people eat, people need food, so you will never be without miles or jobs to do, you will always have a nice check if you arent lazy!! thats it for now brother, if i can give more advice i will!!
