My private report says that 80% to 100% of all government jobs should go away.

All trains use to have weigh cars on the end of them. The conductor (brakeman) and a switch man road in them. The government came up with a FRED which was a Federal Rear End Device. That measured the air flow from the rear of the train and reported it to the hoghead who is the driver of the train. The weigh car was then retired.
Some day there will be a system that could replace drivers. It will be hacked by foreign actors who mean us harm. Who knows what the future holds but I believe a violent protest against driverless trucks would be a good thing.wyldhorses, rocknroll81, Hoodoo Voodoo and 1 other person Thank this. -
There will always be a driver monitor. Someone's gotta go to jail for the mega robos when the sensors fail.

If Tesla has already been hacked....what's to stop bad dudes (foreign or not) from taking over a fuel tanker and re-routing it OR, just ramming other cars on a bridge?

Picture this. No more drivers in Commercial Vehicles. All information automatically sent in. That would include weights on each axle, speed of the truck, and all the like. Therefore, there would be no need for the Department of Transportation. Do you really think a government agency would pass rules that cause them to lose a job?

1. We don't need autonomous vehicles for this. Anyone can get a CDL and do this. The planes that crashed on 9/11 were not autonomous. So if you're truly worried about the terrorist thing than we need to shut down ALL trucks now. If these people were able to attend pilot school I'm sure CRST and Cr England isn't going to be able to weed them out of their schools.
2. This is nothing new with the Tesla. It's autonomous features have nothing to do with it's vulnerability. These same hacks, and far worse, were shown on Jeeps only a year ago, without any autonomous features built into those vehicles. So I guess we also need to take any vehicle with an internet connection off the road now as well. I'd post a link but instead just google Jeep Hack and you'll find plenty.
I'm all for vigilance, but not at the price of progress.

@Duurtipoker ...I'm in agreement with you....but...
This autonomous ability will make execution of any nefarious action LARGE SCALE....so no more "lone wolf" or "self-activated" nuisance
Just plant a bug, and hit activate switch...
Imagine 2050 and all vehicles are interconnected....and they all start speeding @ 100mph ramming into each other...there'll be a lot of pissed off early adopters..lol...Y'all thought Toyota's sticky pedal was bad????...
