Hey all, got the process started to get my cdl and training through USA Truck. I've browsed this forum and others for days only to find a very common whining routine and obvious lack of common sense regarding USA Truck employees, mainly new hires. So since i couldn't find anything regarding what I was looking for I figured I would ask myself. The training will be in Springfield, MO. I've heard next to nothing about this facility other than that the one in St. Louis shut down. Has anybody gone to this place lately? Has anyone on here finished school or heard about it? The other question I have is Terminal Location. The closest one to me would be W Memphis. I've heard bad things about that place, but I live in Western KY and thats the closest from what i've found. If thats the case, how would coming and going from home work? would I bobtail there and back? thats like a 300 mile round trip...would I pay for that fuel? Would like to know if anyone in the area knows or has heard about this or not.
And before I get bashed or loaded with crap about how bad USA Truck is, here are my reasons for signing with them. I get my CDL and training paid for by them, since i don't have enough to do it myself at this time. And unlike a lot of people who's posts i've read on here, i DO understand that this is an entry level company. The high turn around is forseeable. If I have to drive to w memphis and back each time i come home (which isn't a priority or I wouldn't want to be an OTR driver) then so be it, all i need is the license training and experience to go somewhere more local and that fits my needs and wants. I am going into this decision knowing that the first year will be rough, it's like that with any job. You can't become #1 overnight. you have to pay your dues.
But anyway. Just needing some input if any is out there on the Springfield, MO training and Terminal Location for Western KY residents.

USA doesnt have seperate "home terminals" for drivers. all dispatch is out of van buren. when its time for your of days you will get a load that delivers as close to home as possible. then you deadhead home from there (unpaid)
sicksfeet Thanks this. -
thank you for the quick reply, i haven't read that anywhere and I much appreciate the input. that's good to know and eases my mind up quite a bit.

I'll see if I can help. West Memphis isn't all that bad as a terminal. But because of some "incidents" they have a VERY strict policy against going to the Pilot/Petro/TA out there.
To wit: If you're IN W. Memphis, you MUST stay at the terminal. (You can still go out to eat though, I highly recomend RAY's BBQ)
If you're going though the company training program, you're gonna have to put in a year SOLID. Most people's problems happen when they bail inside of a year. (I was trained by PA unemployment, so AFAIK they can't do anything about me leaving early)
Usually you take your truck home with you. (But you may have to provide information about where the truck will be, including photo documentation) So you might want to put your regular car in storage for a while. Also. I took my hometime in NYC, and I found a place to keep the truck that was near a "security-sensitive" area. I could park the truck, but I was not permitted to take pictures of the location. And my Fleet Manager didn't have a problem with that since I never had any damage or theft when I was off-duty.
Oh and when I say home with you,,, I mean WITH the trailer,,,, so you might want to think about where you can go with that. You get in more troble for dropping a trailer than going out of route to hit the house.
I won't ##### about USA, on balance they've been pretty good to me. But personal/family issues put me on the spot and I had to resign. Hope it works out for you. -
USA Truck is a good company to work for, i will not state they are THE BEST simply because they, like most other trucking outfits, have some grey areas too. USA Truck is better in getting you home when you ask for time off, although there might be some current and/or former USA Truck drivers that may disagree with me on that.

How about the west coast drivers, how are they run, and are they getting north south loads or running the whole system?

Infosauer Dude, are you saying the driver has to stay at the terminal in W.Memphis or the truck and driver? What if the driver wants to b/t down to the Pilot and act crazy on the C.B. all night long? :smt071
