In 2016 my company finally retired my ‘99 FL that I had been in since new and I wanted to buy it. It had 1,058,388 mi. on it at that time but the odometer read 471,776 because it had been replaced twice in its lifetime due to speedo gauge wig out. When I registered and changed title to my name the subject of mileage never came up because it was considered exempt due to its age. They automatically just type in exempt for mileage. My company didn't have to claim mileage discrepancies at time of sale nor did I.

As I stated, sell it as exempt or TMU and all is right with the world.
But had they sold it as 471776 and stated it as such on paperwork they would be in trouble and facing criminal charges.
You do not have to title something as exempt just because of its age unless they changed things on the past 2 years.

I have several vehicles that could be listed as exempt but due to thier age and mileage being ridiculously low I refused to title them as exempt. Having the milage show as 2398.2 on a classic car is definitely something You don't want to loose both on the speedo and the paperwork.
Milage statements by dealers for advertising and value can be called into question. They can be held accountable if they sell on the presumption of lower miles and its known to be innaccurate.

State of Texas automatically makes it exempt not the seller or buyer. No choice has to be made. They figure the vehicle isn’t worth much at that age anyway. Blue books aren't much and neither is trade in value. It has been that way as long as I can remember. Nice and easy that way.

I’m amused at the ads I see for 20+ yr old Trucks and they’re listed low mileage. My 2000 only has 125k. Not counting the 2 mil before replacing the speedometer. Mileage on a 20 yr old Truck is a non issue. The current condition is all that matters. An ecm check would give the real mileage, as long as it’s original. Low mileage local Trucks could be more problematic than a high mileage Truck that’s gad better maintenance. You need a good mechanic to help you decide. At best you’ll get an educated guess.

These are not title alterations, these are reports in the database that CarFax pulls the info has these entries in them.

There is a lot of mistakes that pop up in that database.

... i guess for him more important to have clean history and clean title than recent overhaul of the major components... Next thread he will ask about excessive blowby , 3 gals of coolant in 100miles , noise in the transmission ( video included ) and sudden vibration in drivetrain week later after the purchase ... But no rust , new paint , clean interior and carfax
