When I was in school recently, one of ou trucks had this "gear master"---its a digital moving scale showing gear , RPM and shift points.
My question is-has anyone used one? Even though I know they are just a crutch, If I could find out where they got it, it might be an interesting toy.
Comments on use? and proper name or where to find one?

I'm not a trucker but use a Volvo 770 to pull my 5th wheel rv trailer. I installed a Gear Master to help with the shifting learning curve (I have no formal training). It's a great shifting tool. Takes all the guess work out of up/down shifting. It tells you exactly what gears are available in your rpm/speed range. Gear grinding is nonexistant. It also has a digital tach and speedo so you never really need to look at the dash gauges anymore.
Just Google Gear Master for their website. I bought mine when they had a sale going...around $800 at that time. Normally $1000. -
We had them in a couple trucks at the school I went to. They are NOT for you to rely on when to tell you to shift gears. Atleast thats what our instructors told us. They are there to get you back on track after a missed gear.
