I've heard that, and saw that in a video made by JJ Keller. They said using the Johnson bar to slow the rig can help take weight off the steers, which if blown, would make it easier to steer safety to the side of the road.

Think about it. The trailer is pulling on the back of the truck, what is that going to do in theory? Lift the front, just momentarily, but it will. In fact, by hitting the Johnson bar, JJ Keller said that it would relieve some of the turning pressure on the steering wheel trying to cause the truck to steer to the blown tire.

In fact they said to ACCELERATE after a steer blowout which will take weight off the steers fast enough for you to grab the Johnson bar. It was a neat video. I wish I could find it. They actually put a small explosive on the steer tire of a truck and caused an intentional blowout and showed how it would help.

Problem is, probably only 10% of trucks today even have a J-bar.....

Also, as a survivor of a steer tire blowout, let me tell ya, you don't have the time to grab that J-bar and figure out just how hard you need to pull it. Reacting to a steer blowout needs to be just about instantaneous. Instructing a bunch of rookies to pull on a trailer brake lever will only result in a lot of jack-knife accidents. Stepping hard on the throttle WORKS, even if it ain't elegant. No need to make a stressful situation any more complicated.
