If you are a company driver you only need a small amount of cash, enough to perhaps pay for a CAT scale ($10.50 for first weigh) or something like that. Major items are paid directly by the company, using the Comdata card or billed directly to the company. Every time I've had road service I simply sign off the final bill and keep a copy I send to my company, never had to pay a dime or front any money. If you work for a smaller outfit they should have Comdata cards for their drivers to buy fuel, etc.; so they should also be able to use that for paying for repairs.
Shop at Walmart and get up to $100 cash back to avoid ATM fees.
using your credit or debit card for OTR

I keep my cash on hand at about $100 or less. There's no real need for me to carry more, as I'm at Walmart at least once a week.

I went to Louisiana and the card worked, cross the line to Texas and the card was declined. The reason being is that Texas is apparently a hot spot for card fraud. Call the bank in the morning and they turned on texas for the next 5 days.

Not a trucker yet,
Have had my bank temporarily block my debit card when I traveled to a nearby state. I live in PA. Last fall I went to VA. Could use my card in DE fine, but when I got to VA and tried to use it it got declined. Called them up and told them I would be in VA for a week and they unlocked it and 'put a note on my account' about it.
Haven't had issues using it in NJ or NY. Not even a phone call about it.
Have had them cancel it (more then once) when a charge was attempted from halfway across the country. -
My bank knows that I am all over the country, but that didn't stop them from shutting off my card when they detected a fraudulent attempt to steal from my account. I was in Chicago and someone tried to use the same card on the same day in a different state. Busted!

I travel internationally with my current job in the oilfield (ONLY 10DAYS LEFT!!!), but I called my bank and let them know I never knew where I would be sent and requested NO area blocks and it has worked fine from Norway to Vietnam to Brazil and all points in between. I am with a small bank, but it looks like they can open it up if you request it. I try not to use it due to the ATM fees, but it is nice to know you can if absolutely necessary.

I'm 48 state OTR and I use my debit card everywhere and always as a credit card , no pin required . I have only had problems where I made a purchase over a few hundred dollars in which case I change it to a debit transaction . I never informed my bank I was a truck driver and if my bank restricted access to my money to a limited number of states I would change banks .
You folks need to quit being sheep . You are the customer and you are in charge of your money and not some bank . They exist for OUR convenience not the other way around . However , if you instruct your bank to remove the fraud restrictions you need to be extremely careful with your card .simpleman78 Thanks this. -
Im with a credit union and have been for years. There are many times they have locked it and i call and explain each time what i do for a job. That normaly lasts about 6 months and then i have to explain it all over again to someone else when its locked. I now carry a backup credit card for this reason.
dannythetrucker Thanks this.
