I looked long and hard at Walmart last year. Talked to a recruiter. Read reviews and watched you tube. I came to the conclusion that it was too big a risk. You can quit your job and then fail orientation and you are now jobless. Also their culture of strict rules for which you can get easily fired. Or fired because another driver tattled on you for chewing gum during pretrip or some such. No security in a.job like that.

Socks in the winter. Big thick wooly ones. The hell with tradition, I hate cold feet.:)
No socks the rest of the year.

Another well thought out and articulated observation. In my experiences at two big corporations, they lacked the independent autonomy/common sense of smaller employers. Hive mind. You're just an expendable worker bee and why should the collective exert one iota of energy helping you when your replacement will be hatched by weeks end.

Your location most definitely is a hinderance to your needs for most companies.

Perhaps they don't have empty trucks available for good reason?
.55-.65 is normal. The true test is the actual mileage versus the claimed miles available.

Those pursuing candidates NEED drivers for a reason. Those going with the flow and waiting for drivers to come to them don't need drivers every day for a reason.

This is true for most places. I talk to one of our drivers (well HE talks to everyone a lot when he comes through) and he tells tales of speaking to other drivers out there who don't believe him when he tells them how he is kept moving... and can pass through the same truck stop on the flip side and see the same drivers still sitting, waiting for their next load who don't believe he left, drove a few hours, D/H and came back for the night on the next load.
I think you should put FCC in the back of your mind if they aren't currently hiring... they seem to be set up a lot like we are and don't have the turnover issues many places have. Sometimes promises of big money aren't what they seem.

I'd offer you a job but for three things: one, you are out of area, two, I couldn't promise you no midnight-4am, and three, I don't currently have a truck to put you in.
