99% of trailers that are labeled 13 ft 6 in are not. They are over or under and that depends on each tractor that pulls it also. Hauled cars for 25 years, know all about measuring heights and loads. That is the only way to know for sure.

I gave up trying to take the west bound I64 tunnel. I run east to 664 and run that back up to 64 to go back west.

Ill be headed back to NC via 58...I think I can stay on 64 east to 664 and miss that tunnel on 264 in Portsmouth. I did stop at the inspection area when bobtailing but didn't set off the alarms... Ill be bringing my tape measure too...lolI noticed a lot of intermodal container trucks on 58.....

Before my move last year, I lived about a 1/4 mile from the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The reason the VDOT is so tough there is because the HRBT is a MAJOR pinch point in the area. I have seen traffic backed up for miles each way because of all sorts of things. In fact, they are drilling a new tunnel there to help resolve some of the congestion.

I know it is a major pain in the rear, but if you are not 100% sure you can get through that westbound tunnel either use the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel or follow US 17 and cross using the James River Bridge.

I’ve had the over height detector go off heading west into the tunnel. The light turns red and a guy runs out and you have to go around to get measured. Apparently my trailer was a tad over 13’6”. He actually told me if I got stuck it’s 10 grand minimum. I think he was actually giving me the option to try it. I went around the other way. There’s a lot of traffic around there so I don’t ever go towards the 64 tunnel anymore.

The bridge on 58 I’ve never had a problem with. Gone through there hundreds of times. Hit the left lane if you’re worried about it.
