I'm a student hopefully to hit the road soon. I am a veteran with a service connected injury/disability which entitles me to free VA health care. Do any of you past service members use the VA Health system while on the road? Is it even possible?

That is an excellent question, although I have not had the need for it OTR,(yet) I have wondered about that.

Why don't you call your V.A. Center and ask,or,as I have my semi-annual check-up on the 27th in St.Cloud,Mn,I WILL ask them in person, and post here what I find out.

Yeah I guess calling the VA is a good idea. I figured I'd check first with the guys on the front line.

I use the VA for health services, but I'm local so I can't really help.I would be interested in knowing the answer about OTR though.

Good question. I to am a service connected and I use the VA health system all the time. It is very possible. There are VA medical centers everywhere and even clinics. It is very doable and I wish you luck. By the way i'm an OTR Driver and has been for the last 14 years.

It shouldn't be a problem. One thing a company will do is get you home for a doctor appointment. It's a good excuse to use every time. ;)

When I started having problems I was going to my private doctor every month. Never missed a one. Then when I lost my health insurance I started using the VA.

You have to use the same outpatient clinic. Emergencies, you can go to any hospital. I know one guy who had a heart attack. He was told to go to the local hospital and the VA paid for it.

You know how the VA is. They don't want to see you as much as a normal doctor. Every three months or so. Just call the appointment hotline and have them stack your appointments at the hospital. Then call a couple days before to verify your appt. If you can't make it, they don't really care. Just talk to scheduling and reschedule. But your company should work with you.

Mine did. Want to go fishing? I have a doctors appt that day! :)

Even though I haven't even started driving yet I am in the same boat. But I am from PHX and I see all the snow birds come down here for the winter, so I don't see why not use them for accute/emergency care.

As far as going to a regular hospital/ER, it all depends on what the issue is. I went to a local er here and VA refuses to pay because I did not go and sit a day and a half in their ER department waiting to be seen. So check with the VA on some issues.

FDNY: are you using your GI bill for schooling? If so are you still going to be getting your BAH while out with your trainer till you get you A seat?

My doctor told me that if I needed anything on the road to call my clinic and they would call the nearest VA clinic for me and set up an appt. or whatever I needed.

Sporty, look under the appreticeship program from the VA, you can get paid 100% BAH for the fist 6 months and then 80% for the second six months. Only problem is there is only a few companies that are VA certified, ( Con-way, Schneider, Werner, and few others).
