Im wondering if there are any opinions on this.
Right now im running a 5 ton truck with a 26ft dry box. I can haul about 16,000lbs max with the setup. I work Southern Ontario, Canada based out of the Toronto area. I get work off a load board and also repeat customers. Its not bad, Im profitable and having fun. Theres plenty work. Some days its nothing but cheap freight but other days are good and sometimes I can find expedite loads that pay well, especially if its odd hours or odd locations. I can gross $10,000-12,000 per month doing this.
But, I see alot of stuff on the board for flatbeds. For example, 10,000 lbs 10 feet 200 miles. Im wondering if profitability could grow in the flatbed business. I could ditch the box and put a deck on the truck and get some used flatbed gear.
Anyone tried both? Would it be worthwhile to switch to flats or stick out the van business? One thing pulling me to flats is the increased skill and knowledge to be learned which may help the business down the line. But the van stuff is easy, skids, and theres tons of freight all the time.

Hell if I know. How bout a curtain on one side? For offloading w/o dock? That could be your niche best of both worlds. They don’t call me idea man for nothing!!!

I think it would be tough to haul van freight on a flat.
Maybe pull a flat behind box. -
I used to run hotshot for a guy in Houston that runs some straight trucks upto 52k gvw. He does a lot of local and regional and has been doing it for years now so I assume he's profitable.
The only flatbeds I know are 53ft long. -
26’ box. So you’re in a class 7 truck right? If you don’t have a lift gate, get yourself a flatbed to pull behind you. A 25-30’ eagerbeaver or something along them lines. You can pull equipment or regular flatbed freight.
