If you lived in Vegas and were considering starting out in the trucking industry, where would you start if you were me?
I've read a lot here, but need some specific guidance. I do realize that I just need to find a company to survive with for a year or two from what I've read.
About me: Late 40's. Kind of out of shape, so (from what I've read here) flatbed seems like a bad idea. Nothing on my criminal record. DMV report is so clean that you could eat off it and I've been driving a taxi for the past three years (I did get a speeding ticket when I was 16) so I'm fairly sure that I will be a safe driver wherever I end up hanging my hat. I have $8.17 in my checking account to apply toward training costs (I can get the $$ for the testing, but can't pay out of pocket for training. Excellent credit, so I could finance if necessary). My employment history is good. My needs (in order of importance) are: 1) surviving and learning enough to make a career, 2) money (benefits would be nice), 3) home time (home 4 full days per month on average is good enough).
Further information about me: full head of hair, pretty easy going with others, somewhat smarter than a brick.

Just curious, what are the strip clubs paying these days? Way back when I knew a limo driver that claimed to make 6 figures because the clubs would pay $80/head.
Knight has a yard there doing port runs, and they have a training program.Sirscrapntruckalot and rpad139 Thank this. -

Trucking schools can be expensive. $1500 to $10k for the schooling.
You seem like a solid person with good working history. I would go to one of the trucking schools in las Vegas if you are able to finance.
Avoid swift, knight, werner, cr england if you pay for your schooling. Doesnt make sense to drop $10k on a loan then go to a company like swift, etc....VegasDriverMan and tscottme Thank this. -
Southwest Truck Driver Training in Las Vegas will finance their cdl school and first payment isn't due until 45 days after graduation. Good school & many companies hire from there.
State Grants
Southwest Truck Driver Training is a training provider for the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act). We have been successful in training thousands of agency students from Pima County One-Stop Centers, DES Vocational Rehabilitation, DES Jobs, Santa Cruz Workforce, Maricopa Workforce Connection, Phoenix Workforce Connection, City of Phoenix, Friendly House, Job Connect, Goodwill and many others. In-House Financing
For students who do not meet state grant requirements, Southwest Truck Driver Training offers an in-house tuition program to help meet your needs. We offer affordable payment plans to suit your needs. Loans payments typically do not start until 45 days after graduation which gives you time to secure a driving position before making any payment. All trucking companies are required to do a drug test. Some do hair follicle (can look back 12 months) and some do a urine test (look back 90 days). Which do you prefer?
