So I do a lot of hauling from Michigan to California and back. When I go to southern California I take: 80-76-70-15. I'm SICK AND TIRED of running 70 at max gross weight. I'm currently loaded right at 79,900. Right now I'm on a 34 in Vegas and I'm contemplating an alt route back to MI to avoid 70.

I'm thinking of taking 15 north to Utah 189 to us40 to I80w and then all the way across to MI. That route will be ~48 miles longer than just taking my usual route of 15-70-76-80.

My hope is the pulling will be easier and thus I will make up the 48 mile difference in time and possibly fuel. Problem is I've never been on 15, north of 70, up to 80, so I have no idea if I'm jumping out of the frying pan (I70) and into the fire with taking 15n-us189-us40-80w.

    Thoughts would be appreciated...

Might as well try it... I used to run I80 all the way west to I84 into oregon fairly often, and I dont remember i80 being anywhere near as hilly as i70...but i never ran 15 north of 70 either.... :)

Oh yeah, watch the scales in wyoming. There's one on i80 that you do not want to go into. Watch the signs, you only go into scales that say "all commercial vehicles must enter" in wyoming....and this one in particular is the only scale in the whole country that you are supposed to NOT go into....they will weigh you, pull you around back, and then grump at you for interrupting their nap!

You can't run US 189 with anything longer than a 48'.

You could do I40-US54-I35-I70-US54-I72-I55-I80. Don't remember how much farther it is though...

Problem is that from Vegas, he would have to 95 down to Bullhead which is 62 I think. It takes you to 40.

Then do as you posted except on US 54 at Pratt, KS go to 62 to US 50 to 35 and avoid the toll. Then stay on 35 to US 36 to I72 to 55 to chicago.

This route does not add many miles except those to get from Vegas to AZ.

I think he was going all the way to Ca, I thought; just doing his 34 in Vegas.

And I usually cut up to US50 much further west to get away from all those slow freight-haulers on 54.

Why not run I-15 to I-80 ? Still some hills but it would be better than I-70.

Bottomline is Vegas to Salt Lake hang a right head up the hill Toward Evanston and drive till dawn....... I prefer 80 over 70 and the few extra miles is well worth it IMHO... Going south from Vegas really does not make since if you had to explain it. I would prefer 40 and 25 over 70. I just don't care for 70...
