I have seen a few trucks that had vertical mount A/C units mounted on the rear of the cab... looks like an R/V unit, only vertical mount... does anyone know where I can find one of them thar critters??? I have a full condo Columbia and a diesel genset, just need a good A/C unit to keep the bride happy.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Yea I heard KR talking about these A/C's on last weeks show. Would be very interested in one of these. What kind of genset do you run? Had much trouble out of it? What kind of wattage does it put out? What was the cost?

    Thanks in advance

I thought I read in another thread that those vertical units will not hold up on a truck.

wouldnt it be worth just getting an APU system instead?

With the cost of an APU you can do probably 4 genny roof mount set ups! Economics to o/o's are quite different from company drivers

but how much do those systems drain the batteries? Seems it would take some juice to run an ac unit like that without idling the truck off and on to replenish those batteries

No, there is no drain on the batteries... the genset cost me $900 plus another $200 to mount... it pushes 6.5kw surge and 5.7 kw sustained all whilst sipping .2 gal p/hr... the cost of my portable A/C unit was $200... SO.... total outlay for my "redneck" APU: $1300.... cost for a "real" APU: $9-11k... also, I have the genset mounted on my trailer waaaaayyyyy to the rear... can't hear it from here... those APU's are, in a word, OBNOXIOUS when it comes to noise and fumes, especially for the drivers parked within 6 spaces of one! My refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, TV, etc can ALL run at the same time... I have a cheap $30 battery charger I turn on for extended time off as well as a block heater... NONE of these drains are connected to my battery system... the only bug in the soup is the portable A/C is a pain in the neck to setup every night...

guess it depends on the circumstance for the drivers, I know my truck idling sips about .2/hr, I heard some trucks eat more fuel during idle but I dont know.
If I had my own truck i might look into stuff like this just so I can have all the extra perks but im in a company truck so cant.

the noise of idling, apu's and stuff dont bother me, I can sleep through just about anything except extreme movement, I park next to those trucks often with my windows open and sleep like a baby.

go buy yourself a scangauge d to plug into your truck. your going to find yourself slurping more then .2/hr.

even apu's use more then that. and so does my webasto heater.

two bad things about gas mounted gen. 1, they are extra extra loud 2. you always run the risk of knocking yourself off or the person parked next to you, do to the carbon monoxide they produce. my friend was killed that way by a drop deck hauler, the only thing his lawyer said at the lawsuit trial was he didnt think they could produce that much. lots of luck and b safe out there
