Hi all! I'm a new driver with two months of experience.
I've been facing a "new issue" when applying any of the stereotypical companies for new drivers, aka Swift, Schneider, trans am, etc
NONE of them seem to know what to do in regards to my service dog. He was bred, raised and trained by an internationally accredited service dog organization and everything. Even when I attempt to help them get what they need and understand laws, it falls on deaf ears.
I have no other issues that could interfere with employment.... None.
Any suggestions? I'm quickly running out of companies, patience and time/money.
Recruiters willing to actually try to help me are welcome to message me.
Thank you

Check with Central Refrigerated, they have a pet policy, maybe don't tell them about the service part, just your pet.

I tried central. They claimed only contractors train newbies and they couldn't find one willing to allow my SD on the truck.
I was super polite and trued to help. Then they eventually refused to return my calls.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need a service dog? Is this dog with you for a specific reason or because you like him/her? Hard to answer a question until we know all the facts. As I understand it a service dog is to assist the individual for blindness, etc.
OPUS 7 Thanks this. -
If that is the case don't tell them about it during the hiring process. Unless of course they ask about reasonable accommodations. Once they hire you present them with a note from your doctor and there is squat all they can do about it. If they then terminate you, you will have a very valid case to sue them under the American's with Disabilities Act(ADA).

Well, That is bad! very Bad! this dog is taken better care of then the owner in most cases, Thank You for your service, To answer those who have asked "What is the dog for?" The dog is Bred trained and is acute to his problems, I have been told that they are putting service dogs with Vets who have PTSD or other issues when they sleep, The dog will wake the vet up and his recovery from the dreams or whatever the issue may be is much less, I just wish they had the dogs around when my Dad was still alive he had VERY bad Dreams and would clear a room in a minute when he had these dreams, I hope I was able to shed some light on why these dogs are used.
Now You may want to tell them that this service dog is not just a pet or a mut from the Dog Pound that will do thousands of dollars worth of damage to the inside of the cab of a truck, this is a very well educated dog that is with its Master at most all times. Instead of just filling out an application print the application and send them a copy of the letter that the dog is a SD I would certainly fight it!
Again.
Thank You for your Service. This to shall pass, you are tough and can get through this too. If I can be of any specific help please P.M. me I'll do what I can. Thanks.Drivers girl, DoneYourWay, NavigatorWife and 2 others Thank this. -

It's a touchy situation and rare situation as it's not a pet policy issue but a matter of the trainer willing to allow a canine in his truck. Trainers usually don't have pets and pet lovers don't usually train. After training is no problem. Look at it this way a service dog is allowed in any public place but a home owner has the choice of what happens in their home. The company has to make both parties happy. If I was a trainer I wouldn't have a problem but I can't speak for others. There are many people that have pet allergies or have other personal issues outside the scope of the ADA.
Surely you can be separated for 3-8 weeks to get your training completed. It's understandable for a service dog to help someone with PTSD but is that the only known treatment? Both parties have to give a little for this to work. Some customers have a no pet policy issue which can extend to service dogs. There are no exceptions to a food warehouse that is USDA controlled.
Maybe find someone like Watkins- Shepherd that will put you in a truck with zero experience. They can't hold a service dog against you when there is no training issue.
One has to find a career that fits their disability. I'd love to go back to work driving but simply I'm not fit to be back in a truck. I can't expect the DOT and employer to make special accommodations for me when it's a safety sensitive position. I have to find an employer that fits my needs and that's exactly why I'm going to school and retraining for a more accommodating position.road_runner Thanks this.
