Hey all you road warriors out there, Ill be getting out the Navy after 6 years if service and want to pursue my dream of being a professional driver. Only a couple of problems, I want to do flatbed, be able to tap into the apprentice program with the VA, be able to bring my fiancé and my cat with me. Does anyone know of a company that will allow me to do this without becoming a lease/purchase option? If not who could offer at least the fiancé and cat to come with me? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

From a squid to a squid, welcome home and thank you for your service.

Im assuming you are wanting to use your Post 9/11 for CDL school? If so do your homework on the school. Try updating your profile information so the rest of us have an idea as to what neck of the woods you frequent. Talk to Maverick, Melton Truck Lines, and TMC, all of these have VA Apprenticeship programs. TMC doesnt allow animals, and to my knowledge Neither of these push the L/P option.

I got my CDL already back in April of 12 but haven't used it much but don't want to go to a CDL school again. I'm no idiot not saying everyone else is but I drive my pickup like a KW and treat it the same way

You will most likely be required to go through a refresher course before anyone will consider touching you. But ya never know until you attempt to make contact with companies

Thank you for your service and from squid to squid, try Melton. I know they allow a small dog, you'd have to call and ask about a cat. I rode navigator for my husband, helped with just about everything, Rules said a little different though.

Only issue with the fiancee is some of the shipper's & receiver's don't allow non CDL holder's on site. Her having a Twic card I think would get her into the port, CDL or not. Some places just want a 2nd person to sign in, some had a place that I sat and waited...port's check the sleeper, so no "hiding" at them....I did at other places.

It would be something to talk to them about and let them know you would refuse to go into a place that doesn't allow her to go in with you...other than the port's ( they DO have places to wait most inside). I've seen all the companies mentioned above at the same places, so it's not like one company goes their and another doesn't.

We had actually talked about my getting a CDL so it wouldn't be an issue, but Melton didn't hire newbies at that time and would not have allowed me to ride along with a CDL. Thing's to think about.

You could try Systems Transport out of Spokane, WA or Combined out of Central Point, OR. Not sure where you live, but both have hiring areas across the country and both have great equipment and treat drivers with respect. Both haul all over the country as well. Not a squid, more like a Squidward, but I still thank you for your service and welcome home!
