I had read somewhere on the forums that honorably discharged veterans do not have the standard weekly charges for school taken out of their pay. Does anyone have any knowledge on this topic? I'm looking at going to Central the end of Jan/early Feb. 2014.

Also, has any Vet that went to Central used your Post 9/11 benefits for OJT?

    Thanks ahead of time,

    Touk (tewwk)

My husband had to show his DD214 (National Guard discharged 1988)... Working for Central a year took care of half of the tuition, the DD214 took care of the other half. Since we ended up leasing before the year was up, the remainder of the tuition owed (because leasing makes you a 1099 'employee/contractor') was taken care of by the O/O department.

Thanks Lady K, I was hoping you'd chime in. I've been reading your posts and getting more information, from a realist point of view so to speak. I understand the working with them for a year to pay back, I'm not planning on leaving them once I get started. I've heard lots of good things about them, especially from a very close family friend that's been trucking for 20+ years. I was just curious if they still withdraw the money from my check each week like everyone else would. Also, do they withdraw the "school money" from your check while you're with your trainer or do they wait til you're on your own?

jsprocket: I used all my Montgomery GI Bill for college. I got out in 2002, so it wouldn't be good right now anyways. I do however get 40% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill since I served after 9/11. I was told I can use it for OJT, but I'm not sure if Central has that program or not. Good thing is, even if I stay a year and go somewhere else that has OJT, I can still use it up to 2018 (I think that's the date on the paperwork they sent me from VA).

Thank you for your service as well!

They wait until you're out there (I think)... It's been almost three years so I can't remember exactly... And it's a weekly amount. There will be a few other deductions at first... 2 load locks, a lock set, performance bond, etc... So the first few months can get a little lean, but it does get better.

That's why I decided to wait until Feb to go. I'll have my taxes filed by then, and I can use that money to pay my bills while I'm "doing time for the man" lol plus my youngest daughter will have her 1st b-day the end of January. I can bet money that if I missed that, my gf would hunt me down. I've got nothing else on my schedule til the end of next year as far as family stuff goes, so it'll be nice not trying to get home time like everyone else wants.

If you have Skype or FaceTime available it will help. Our 1 y/o grandson would still recognize us even though we hadn't seen him in person for over a month. Plus we could stay in contact with our daughter. I was the stay at home Mom 25+ years ago when hubby drove before... It's not easy being separated on either side!

Yep, we both downloaded and tested Skype this past weekend. Showed her how to use it so there's no "problems" when I leave. My oldest daughter, she's 12, and I Skype all the time.

I hear nobody wants to go to NY, I'd take it. Better chance of seeing my oldest more ;)
