    Hi,

I'm new to the forum and new to trucking. I've been out of the military for a little over two years now, and I'm looking for a job.

Long story short, I live in Des Moines and I've been looking at TMC since they are local. I've also been looking at the local truck driving school at the community college. I can probably get the VA to pay for either since TMC is a VA certified training program.

My question is: Would it be better to go to a trucking school or just go straight to TMC for training?

If you know TMC is absolutely what you want, just go to their training.
If you're not sure, go to a private school.
After being with TMC a few months, you can go anywhere.

I'm not dead set on TMC, it sounds like school is the way to go. I just wanted to ask the folks who know a lot more than I do.

    Thanks!

A good school will give you choices of 100 companies at least. The school will have job placement assistance & recruiters, plus you can send as many apps or pre-hires as you want to as many companies as you want. When you research companies to send applications to, ignore the "experience required" and apply anyway. Also, to broaden your opportunities, get a passport, TWIC, and all the endorsements, especially tanker/hazmat.

not mentioned yet...most companies will pay tuition reimbursement in addition to regular pay. not sure if this applies to tmc. but if va paid for most of the school (and you more than earned that...tyvm by the way) then going to school for nearly free at comm college and then getting extra pay for reimbursement on top of that sounds a whole lot better than any company "free up front" school where they take AWAY from your pay each week to pay it back.

use your GI Bennies and go to the local school.

Do NOT become beholden to the company store by using a company school. If restricts your mobility should a better paying offer come along.

They got you by the nads and they know it.

1st Thanks for your service......Yep, have to agree with the local community college. You will get better training , plus it may even be a little cheaper since you won't have to pay for a room or living expenses. Most tech schools will have some sort of job placement services too. Good Luck.

Disabled vet here (mild). VA paid for my school and included a stipend while in school. Took about 2 weeks to get the ducks in a row.

Companies that take students are different from companies that give you the CDL and hire you. Check with a recruiter from every company that takes students (meaning you got the CDL elsewhere). Many have a vet program. Then see who you are hooked to for the least amount of time. If they are a good company,m stay with them, if bad, you aren't hooked to them any more.

Good luck to you and thank you for your service!
