I am a US-based driver that operates in AB and BC on a weekly basis. I have heard drivers talk about the VHF radios, but don't know what they are used for. Do they replace the CB radio in Canada? Or are they for certain roads or companies?

Yes they do..... can't tell you much about it tho. Did some looking into it a few years back. Mem serves they have like 10 channels VHF, some are forbidden in certain areas like Alberta and Quebec. Don't remember the restrictions.
Looked like a great deal for us here until I did some freq checking. Most of what they use there is assigned here to like small town sheriff, wrecker , amb. etc.
What I did find was the old US civil defense freqs are vacated. 30meg is wide open....unless they have plans for it, but I doubt it. US has a new emergency network coming on line.
Worth a look, CB is old and dated. Look on Ebay for some equipment. Hows your french?

I have a couple of Tad M10'2 with 396 Channels each.
Here's a link to all frequencies. Type in a company name and you will get their frequencies.

HERE'S ANOTHER LINK that you can read thru about VHF. I should add that most truckers in Alaska use VHF. Great distance range. Mine have worked as far as 48 miles.
