    Hey all,

I was hoping the collective wealth of knowledge on TTR might have some input in regards to a vibration in my driveline I've been chasing.... truck in question is a 2014 VNL with a D16 and I shift. I apologise in advance for the novel!

For the past year or so I've been concerned with a slight driveline vibration while freewheeling in gear......more prominent when power divider is locked in. Initial thinking was power divider..... I took the truck to a reputable drivetrain shop in town resulting in a new output yoke in front diff, new interaxle shaft and respective u joints. They didn't look inside as they had found quite a bit on the outside as well as no chunks on the plug or weeping oil anywhere. After that, vibration was a little better, but still there.

Last week I had a chance to get it in there again to keep digging. They pulled the front shaft, changed the 3 remaining u joints, steady bearing, and balanced the shaft. All items were closing in on needing replacement so thats what we did.

Vibration is a little better, but still there. During the initial visit, they were alarmed to see 1/4" of play in the output shaft of my tranny. They called Volvo and the engineers assured them it was within allowable range (hmmmmm)

The vibration is definitely under me, pretty much where the output shaft is. The play in there must be The vibration I've been feeling, no?! I can't fathom having to replace this tranny outside of warranty (first one was replaced under warranty at 250k miles due to the dual mass flywheel debacle)

Does anyone have any insight into this? Any experience with as much output play as mine...or MORE? Anywhere else to look? I know there wasn't anyone that fixed these things a couple years ago, hopefully that has changed since then (And since this tranny has been available for what..over a decade now?)

If it is the tranny and I'm looking at a reman for something simple as output play, I will drive it till it grenades and do a manual conversion. I love this tranny, but I haven't had the best of luck with it in my application.....and I'm scared haha.

    Thanks in advance,

    Stumped

Sounds like the output shaft has an oscillation to it from all that play, makin the shaft whip around... Thats my take anyways. I dont see as how it would be too had to swap in a new bearing, although I aint never messed with that type trans. Goid luck with it and let us know what ya find out!

Has the ride height been measured and compared to spec? Axle angles, as compared to u joint operating angles? Most all driveline vibrations will transmit up the driveshaft and through the trans to be felt in seat and floor. You state "freewheeling in gear" does this mean only decelerating or does it happed under power too. Can you duplicate the vibration on Jack stands running in shop bay? Try removing the intermediate drive shaft if you can to isolate the problem.

sirjeff, Grubby and KB3MMX Thank this.
