Even my POV's have a piece of green scrubby trimmed to fit over the VIN plate on the dash in the windshield. If a cop wants it, he can run my plates and see it on his computer. Nobody else needs to have access to it...and if they feel as though they do, they can ask me for it and I'll make that final determination as to whether their need is justified or not.

As has been stated, with a VIN, a dealership as well as many locksmiths can cut a new key. That in and of itself is reason enough not to advertise my VIN.

I got pulled in to a port of entry in Colorado due to the VIN not being visible on the side of the truck.

City/State was a requirement until a few years ago when it was dropped.

If they ever claim that's the reason, kindly ask them to reference the federal law mandating that.

Cops are normal people too..., some do their job well, some are dumb as hell.
    I've worked with both variety.

    Easy there killer.

Doing unnecessary work for lazy people isn't my mo. I've found the incompetent will have you running circles for them if you let them.

Regarding the DOT man; if he's not lazy can get your VIN several ways without your need to post anything not required. All they're doing is data entry into their computer.

If you think adding your VIN is good, go for it ! But why stop short, try to satisfy everyone with all your info so you don't risk getting pulled in?

I thought the thread was about what is actually required?

Company name & USDOT is all i have. No vin, city/state, and no “fire extinguisher inside” stickers.

I think i’m gonna get a local guy to paint my name on the door here soon. I just have to get around to running up to his place & see what he can do for me. Time to dump the vinyl stickers tho

    KB3MMX Thanks this.

I don’t have the VIN on any of our trucks, I don’t think it’s a big deal if you do though. Last time I had to order a spare key, I had to show the dealer my actual cab card with the VIN and who it belonged to on it. The VIN is also stamped on the frame, if you know where to look.

You can find all kinds of personal info just from your DOT number, and it is required.

No but just like the last 8 of the vin, it communicates to the scalemaster that you are registered for the weight. But if you never permit for over 80k i wouldn't bother.

Seems that Canadian trucks have weight listed.
