Biggest piece of junk on a truck! 32 years and I only had one on a CTI truck and I took the stupid things off on each of those Petes with power steering I was issued. FYI CTI actually in 2002 for the whole 2 weeks I drove there was a slip seat operation! Yep 379s and slip seating but everyone I drove had that stupid suicide knob on it! Each one, that knob came off and when I turned in each truck the shop came unglued because I took off company equipment! Told them they could KMA as it wasn't needed as I knew how to actually control the steering wheel and even offered money in a bet that I could and would back into any hole they wanted better than the guys that had to have one! No one took up my offer! Go figure! I'll still make that offer even tho I've been off a truck since Aug 7th, 2009!

Here is MY reason they should be illegal!

It's raining or maybe a spot of black ice.
The truck loses traction and goes into a skid and you need to be on that wheel impersonating a monkey at a banana picking contest by turning that wheel with both hands keeping control of the steer tires.

You CAN NOT do that with that stupid knob in the way!
Trying to do corrective steering with one had isn't going to work IDC who you are!
I never had power steering until the mid 80's and I never had a problem turning the wheel in a backing maneuver as I learned real early in my driving career as pointed out earlier that wheels rolling wheel turns!
The spokes worked way better than a knob mounted in one spot of a round device as there were spokes at 1/3 intervals on that round thing and gave me 360 different places I could grab the spoke and apply leverage when and where I needed!
The palm of my hand worked pretty well in going forward and backward when only needing a few degrees of turn and after that invention called power assisted steering (even air assist) all the way around!

Then power steering became a must have on trucks and why do you need a knob to steer something with assisted steering? Even when backing!

Then there is a medical problem with a knob and sitting.
Your arm stays in that same area for hours. You become so used to holding it that your arm becomes atrophied and sometime blood clotted from lack of motion. Most people with no knobs are always moving their hands around the wheel. Not to mention the cramps associated in holding onto the knob.

As I said when emergency steering is needed that stupid thing is in your way! If you lose control and hit the dirt that knob is about as useful, as teats on a boar hog! it's going to do nothing to help you when you need both hands on the wheel! it's going to be blocking one hand at a time and if that wheel gets away from you because you can't hold on with both hands it will find one and break it if it's not tangled up in a sleeve!

Another thing about becoming an off road vehicle is even though you should have the seat belt on you need to be holding on to that steering wheel if you don't as while you're holding on to it you're also trying to control where that truck is heading by again having both hands on the wheel and not one of them on some stupid knob! You'll be able to hold the wheel than a small round thingie that might not be in a proper position on that 360* round thing that will always be at 10 and 2, 9 and 3 or 11 and 2!

And no they don't look cool either even on a show truck I have to laugh at them! What a way to screw up a nice steering wheel!

Sorry i was drinking coffee ,when i started reading this, my dad never had any on his trucks and his were old jimmys single axel no power steering, tell what took all my scranny arms too turn that big wheel , so when i go into a century classic with condo, i thought i died and gone too heaven, so smooth a ride, power steering , everything power, i rember playing with the right window one day in the truckstop , never had a windows you could contol from the driver seat, i know its so stupid , but hey it was fun if you never had power windows before:biggrin_2559: what can i say im a true redneck, only thing i could see those spinner knobs for are yard trucks , and thats just a big mayby there too,but with power steering on today trucks , just palm it people no matter what your trainer says, my trainer told me hold the wheel and if i did it his way, my fingers woulda been in the spokes area , not good, for if you hit a bump with steer or a hole , woulda snap the wheel back en took off your fingers and then you couldnt call safety too report the accdent :biggrin_2559: like when you raise the dollys , keep all your fingers tucked in close too wrist and grab it right, not spin it with one finger, and i just palm it on top of wheel , or if you dont care about your fingers just go for it, but rember anytime sometimes accdent's do happen, no matter how carefull you are:biggrin_25513:

Fingers are a GOOOD thing to have. And they are better if they aren't broken!:biggrin_2559:

Sure seems like most of us are in agreement RE spinner knobs. So, we ARE (or in some cases were) truckers, right? So we need to find something to ARGUE about!:biggrin_25523:
