    Hi,

    Currently, I am looking into getting my CDL (it would be so I could operate a commercial vehicle with airbrakes --e.g. a freightliner medium duty truck and it would also be my own personal vehicle--not one that hauls a trailer or passengers), my question is, would this at all be possible if my vision is 20/20 (left eye) 20/100 (right eye) (I wear glasses full time)?. Or, would I have to apply for an exception from my state?. I *might* travel out of state with said vehicle, but it depends.

    I have way worse and I have a CDL... yours is not so bad.

    All you have to do is pass the vision test with glasses.

    How Does The DOT Vision Test Work?
    A person must have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70 in the horizontal Meridian (the horizontal meridian runs from the observer's left, through the fixation point, and to the observer's right) in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber;

    In other words, you must have clear vision, at least 20/40 with or without glasses/contacts (what you can see at 20 feet, someone with perfect vision can see at 40), your eyes can see side-to-side normally, and you can recognize the colors on traffic signs and signals.

    Note: Color vision: The color vision requirement is met by the ability to recognize and distinguish among red, amber, and green, the standard colors of traffic control signals and devices. True color perception is not required.

    The visual acuity test is used to determine the smallest letters you can read on a standardized chart (Snellen chart) or a card held 20 feet away.

    In the event that a driver requires corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses) in order to read the eye chart, the Medical Examiner will indicate this on the medical report, checking the box labeled "Qualified only when wearing corrective lenses", which will also appear on your physical CDL license, in one form or another.

    Ry, if that is 20/100 is corrected you are going to be out of luck. I am currently working through a vision issue caused by a cataract in my left eye. Only correctable to 20/50. A waiver, unless I read the paper work wrong, is only available to current drivers, who can demonstrate a significant history of safe driving prior to the request for waiver. The waiver application asks how long you've been driving, how many miles you've driven, how many accidents you've had, etc. It also requires a doctor to support your waiver application. It also appeared to me that I would be ineligible for a waiver, because my issue is correctable with surgery. Again, unless I read it wrong, temporary issues are not eligible for a waiver. DOT don't care how long you are off work until you can fix it. Looks like I'm gonna be off work until late Nov or early Dec. That's if the surgery is successful at correcting my eyesight. Good luck. I hope you can do what you'd like. But don't hold your breath.

    What I posted was relevant for interstate trucking. Depending on your state, you may be better off than I am. I need to please the feds.
