    Hey Crew, :biggrin_25514:

Just pulled my vnl780 out of storage for one year. Made my first run with it Fontana to VA. Not bad 36k in the box, right at 6mpg. Lots of smoke...and i'm starting to remember all the little nuisance items that I'd nicely forgotten about while it was parked.:biggrin_2551:

Like the EPG issue that i've seen in other threads. I had the governor replaced just beofre it was parked. I'll have to work on that soon.

But the bigger issue is the Oil (not coolant) temps. I peaked out at 240/241 climbing to Flagstff friday afternoon. The Coolant dial only barely approached 200.

What temps have other D12 drivers experienced?

The only code for temp: oil or coolant is an Instrument cluster reading "coolant temp guage precent communication error"

    : other fun codes
EPG mid128 ppid 124 fmi5---(that's has to be the 5volt reference circuit?? that i'm trying to self diagnose) I swear i'm going to become an electrical engineering genius keeping this volvo running- My 'tobuy' list now includes the fluke170 ammeter, some jumper wires, ohm meter, and some a/c manifold gauge set from Harbor freight and a vacuum pump.

    I think i've watching ericthe carguy to much....on YT.:biggrin_2559:

Oil temp on any truck should not be that far of from the coolant temp since the oil is coolant cooled you should see at most a 20 degree difference that sounds a little to high and as far as you're EPg problem if the 5 v circuit fail the there is going to be more than one component that's affected so I highly doubt it's that from my experience with d12 the EPg valve itself usually goes bad. The way to put it out of maybe 50 times I've seen that code 48 was the actual EPg valve the other two the wires by the starter cables were rubbing and got messed up check the wires first than replace the EPg

    thanks Nasriza...
I had the EPG replaced just prior to parking it a year ago. It has less than 5000 miles on the new unit, and the problem appeared with the engine brake not working immediatley after the reaplcement.( what got me to replace it was a massive air leak on the unit itself- out of the side relief valve- I had lost ALL power....creeping) anyway, after it was replaced....power came back but i lost the VEB.

EPG PIC.jpg ps: the air was leaking from the circular port with oring.

In november 2010 I had the Oil Sensor replaced. That's about 260k miles ago. restating that. I'm looking for a deeper understanding of how the oil is cooled(like where- by the coolant) :biggrin_25526:

It's housed on the right side of the block behind the turbo and tha air compressor you might have something in the coolant from sitting for so long try to clean you're cooling system a couple of times if not then probably the oil thermostat is stuck . It a small radiator housed in the coolant. You can try to put an external oil cooler somewhere but I don't know how or where you would mount it

I'm checking the manual for thermostat. Is that different than the oil pressure sensor(which i assume was a combined temp/pressure sensor)

Ya It is a lot different looks the same as a coolant thermostat most likely it is going to be my the turbo side of the engine close to the oil cooler I'm assuming
