hello everyone please help? i have a volvo d12 engine 2001 and last week while i was unloading the truck start crunking itself ( it was already working ) so i turn the key off but it didnt stop.I remove the red cable on the battery and i tried to punch him on top on solenoid cz i tought it's stuck, but notting has change. So i rent a car and went to a volvo dealer and got a new starter.I replace it myself and the truck start normal without any problem.Everythin was ok i drove it 950 miles to get back home in chicago and left it on my parking. Yesterday i went there to start it and get back on the road and the truck was weird?? didnt want to crank at all, the voltage on the batteryes was btween 10-11 volts?? i check the cables on the starter and they were like burned (the plastic cover on the cables was falling apart ).I think while sitting on the parking it start crunking itself again and probably until the battery are death it didnt stop? any idea what should i do? Is it possible the starter is death now? what can cause that engine to start crank itself( could it be starter relay?) PLEASE HELP

It probably has an autostart system on it that is engaged to help keep the battery charged up? I had an International in 2002 that had that. When the batteries would fall to a certain voltage, the truck would automatically start up to charge the batteries. The control to mine was in the sleeper. You could disengage it from that control box. It may have burnt your new starter up? Id take it to Volvo and let them check it for an autostart system when you get it back running. Youre not supposed to crank one manually as long as that's engaged because they said it would burn the starter up.

Hello, I have the same problem today with my 2007 Volvo d12. I checked starter relay I put screw on n the relay cable no crank. But when I touch the black cable on the relay it click. Is that means starter is bad ? I used hammer on starter between the red and black cable it sparks means batteries are good. Any other help please.

Heh,heh, heh ! I had a 1968 KW, 250 Cummins. While driving the starter engaged ! Had the starter rebuilt. The battery cable ran thru a hole in the frame with a rubber grommet circling the hole to protect the battery cable. The grommet was mostly gone & the positive cable eventually wore thru, shorting out the starter.
