You should have gotten some warning and code(s) before it derated.
Usually derates to 90% for like 6 hours, so you have time to get to a wrench.

Look up the codes, and call a dealer or wrench and ask what they mean. I'd go to a dealer.

Mine only did that once, when I was in the middle of Wyoming, after I didn't use the Smart Idle. I ran like 78 MPH all the way to, think was Ft. Bridger, they wanted $187.50/hr. to look at it.

Dude told me several possibilities on the phone. When I went out and started it, to drop the trailer, code was gone, no idea what it ever was.

My dealer recommends servicing the DPF every 180K or so as a PM measure, to stay trouble free.

Might just be a bad sensor, cracked CAC, or the DPF is gummed up. Take it to a dealer. Get the codes off the display.

Possibly bad egr valve, then the soot plugs up the egr cooler. same message, ran to Mountain States Volvo in SLC. 5000.00 and 2.5 days. new egr valve, sent out egr cooler to clean out, ran better, but still check engine light on, replaced oxygen sensor and trouble free after that.

Had the same thing happen three weeks ago.....parked regen wasn't bringing soot levels down with that same error message. Ended up being bad fuel injectors overinjecting....fried the EGR Sensor, EGR Cooler, cracked the DPF Filter, almost fried the DOC Filter (got away with a clean rather than replace there), and the Nox sensor, 14K and a tow later, back on the road.

Not sure about the fix, but, heard it is a "sort of punishment" built in the computer.Example: You have your foot in to much, mileage isnt meeting standards company wants. If you drive our trucks"like theres an egg shell under the pedal, you dont want to break, they actually get an android trophy on the dash and "Ramping up it says. You get 2 to 4 miles an hour power as a bonus.May use it for passing sparingly.Have to keep the trophy.Think they have to hook to computer at a dealer to get the derate reset.

Forgot to add its not always the drivers fault.Problems with the emissions(too much pollution) can force a regenerate. The SCR (special catalyst reduction) system can go haywire.Def filter plugged, etc.

Had that happen to me. It turned out to be a bad ACM wire and a leaking flex pipe.

Check for an exhaust leak on the flex pipes. What codes is it throwing? How many miles on the truck?

there is very little you can do once this comes up the whole idea with dpf is to make sure that it get maintained properly, the way to do this is simple stay on top of the check engine faults, make sure your filters are cleaned every 150k to 200k make sure 7th injector is cleaned at least once a year, make sure you do not see any leaks between turbo and dpf. Now that being said there is nothing you can do when it has a fault but if it throws a code for soot level being to high this there is something you can do for it to force a regen on the side of the road. this is my trick that i have found over time so it's not recomended by volvo or cummins but it works i have tried time and time again it will also not cause any damage what you want to do when this code is coming up is find the delta p for the filters should be mounted right on dpf or catalyst and it has two lines going to it with rubber hoses and small clamps if you take those rubber hoses away you are going to take out how the truck monitors the filters and you can force a regen like this to maybe buy you some time but it is a long shot. other than this the only other trick i have is when your engine goes into a 5mph derate from scr just unplug the speed sensor at the end of trans and you will be able to drive to destination. Hope this helps.
