I just purchased a 2014 Volvo used has some 35k on it
Last week was very cold in toronto and I had problem with start.
Two days in row the engine just stopped as I peddle the gas as it just start.
Used starting spray later to ignite it .
Is there any starting instructions as keep the peddle pressed to floor , or peddle it two three times or don't touch it while starting.
Or any kind of trick to start it. The batteries show some 13.5 which is enough to rotate the wheel ...
    Plz help

Why would you shut it off when it's so cold???? Leave it run and get yourself an Espar Heater.

the volvo trucks come factory with a engine heater. when you turn the key to the on position, press and hold it in for a second and a squiggly line symbol will come on your dash. that preheats the head, if its real cold out do it twice.

    atwal Thanks this.

and dont touch the throttle peddle!!!!!!! if you cold start it and try and give it throttle that is not good for it at all, once it fires you need to let it run at base idle for a minute before kicking up the high idle to build oil pressure and temperature.

    Thanks I'll try
But one thing ..... There does come a spiral symbol as I turn the key on but it goes with the lights and I tried to press the key inward but the coil doesn't show up. I thought the heater is not installed .

Maybe yours does not have the preheat. If it does not and you don't have a espar or wabasto the leaving it running or having it plugged in are you only options. Cold starting a diesel engine is very very very bad for them.

atwal and Prairie Boy Thank this.

A can of ether and a match usually works good. Expecially when it says Volvo on the hood.

It's hard to take anyone seriously who talks bad about volvo right now. When it comes to new trucks volvo is having the best luck by far with emission. Kenworth and peterbilts are now garbage if equipped with a cummins seeing as they live in the shop.

At least Detroits doing ok. I just kind of laugh at the closed minded people driving Petes cause they look manly. What makes me look manly is the $2000 a month I save in fuel which equals a brand new truck paid for once my warrant is up and the fact that when I'm training someone we aren't touching elbows.

Heck I wasn't a volvo fan..... But I sure am now.

Me too I like Volvos but I start thinking about my next truck and I am getting inclined towards Mack trucks they are owned and operated by Volvo no doubt but those are more simplified units . Sturdy and may be a little less problematic than Volvo.
I don't say that Volvos are a big problem but these are trucks not cars
    Will try this time
    Thanks again for ur help
