Do a blowby test on it. Put it on a dyno. Have the oil changed and a sample pulled of whats in there. Have the ECM pulled and a data dump done. Make sure it wasnt run over safe RPM or if it was by how much and how often. Do a rig-dig (link below) and see if the previous company still has records or if it was a flybynight 3rd worlder from mexico with more out of service reports then bent axle bob.
Drop and clean the fuel tanks. Replace the coolant. Make sure no one was running christ alone knows what kind of stop leak through it. Make sure it doesnt have alterd emissions (read wasnt stealth deleted) and someone didnt put a weird tune in the computer. Have ALL the fluids pulled and samples taken. I.e dif, transmission ect. Make sure it has the correct type of coolant in it and that all the sensors are reporting correctly and look for rotted fuel/coolant lines, hard lines like for oil and rotted airbags or air lines.
Do all of that and you will have a pretty reasonable picture of the rigs health.

I also strongly recommend finding a shop you can trust and on a newer Volvo that's probably a dealer. I realize 'trust' and 'dealer' are mutually exclusive but it is possible to find a good one that will take care of you when needed.TruckerSerge and Siinman Thank this. -
