When the drive line is out of phase every revolution it wants to straighten itself out, it causes a shock wave back threw the drive line and can do all kinds of damage to transmissions especially but most anything. The drive shaft actually speeds up and slows down twice in every revolution. Gm use to have a video of a drive line out of phase with white and red quarters and when right it was pink when wrong it could be white or red depending on the position.
Improper phasing would destroy an Alison's clutch drive plates. It will damage a standard as well and a gear man can spot the problem from the damage to the individual parts.
