I'm looking at purchasing a 2006 Volvo 670 with a Volvo VED engine. I'm not familiar with these engines although one truck I looked at, which has a digital readout, showed that the avg mpg was 7. Does anyone know where the Volvo engine falls in fuel economy for long haul vs. Cat C12 and Cummins? If you have experience with Volvo, what is your opinion of their 12 liter engine as far as power, fuel economy, reliability, etc? This truck has about 300,000 on it.

I drove for a small company that had Volvo 465HP with 13 speeds, and they sucked. Granted they were governed at 67, but they had no pulling power and they seemed to have quite a bit more engine noise/rattle than the other motors.
The Volvo that I'm in now has a 400HP Cummins ISX with a 9 speed, and it does pretty fair for power. As for the MPG, I usually get right around 7 on average. The ECM shows 6.8 or so, and I'm right at 150K miles on the odometer.rob86gn Thanks this. -
Buy a CAT, upgrade it to 1000HP and get 8 MPG. Don't mess around with a volvo.

volvo's suck....just ask 550
lol
ask eskimo what he's got, and how he likes it -
Mine is a 95 flattop with the 12.7 Detroit with a 10 speed.....The motor has a million miles without a rebuild and I get between 6 3/4 to 7 1/4 mpg. I run between 65 and 70 when I can......

I say get what makes you happy, my biggest issue would be lack of service, if you must have the volvo go for the ISX, if you break down at least a Freighstaker dealer will work on it. If you have a vulva motor they will let you ride the hook to the nearest vulva dealer, which are far and few between out west.rob86gn Thanks this. -
I test drove two Volvo trucks today, one with the Cummins ISX and one with the Volvo 465hp. Even though the Cummins was only 400hp it felt much more powerful than the Volvo engine on the bottom end. It also showed 7mpg where the Volvo engine showed 6.5mpg. I guess that settles it, I'm getting a Volvo truck with a Cummins engine. Thank you all for your input. Now I just have to find a company to work for..

It seems like most of the companies want their owner operators to have newer trucks. Thats why I'm going with an 05. Plus I'm trading in a dump truck that is worth as much as an 05. But next spring I'm going to look for a older Mack or Kenworth day cab with a wet kit. Right now I'm searching for a good company to work for as an owner operator.

Yeah, I run for my brother and as long as it can pass inspection and looks like its taken care of then he is happy.
