I'm looking at purchasing a 2006 Volvo 670 with a Volvo VED engine. I'm not familiar with these engines although one truck I looked at, which has a digital readout, showed that the avg mpg was 7. Does anyone know where the Volvo engine falls in fuel economy for long haul vs. Cat C12 and Cummins? If you have experience with Volvo, what is your opinion of their 12 liter engine as far as power, fuel economy, reliability, etc? This truck has about 300,000 on it.

I drove for a small company that had Volvo 465HP with 13 speeds, and they sucked. Granted they were governed at 67, but they had no pulling power and they seemed to have quite a bit more engine noise/rattle than the other motors.
The Volvo that I'm in now has a 400HP Cummins ISX with a 9 speed, and it does pretty fair for power. As for the MPG, I usually get right around 7 on average. The ECM shows 6.8 or so, and I'm right at 150K miles on the odometer.

Buy a CAT, upgrade it to 1000HP and get 8 MPG. Don't mess around with a volvo.

    Mine is a 95 flattop with the 12.7 Detroit with a 10 speed.....The motor has a million miles without a rebuild and I get between 6 3/4 to 7 1/4 mpg. I run between 65 and 70 when I can......

Now now Paul, i only had 27k lbs in the box and returned empty, still 8mpg is impressive, even if its 8.09 :biggrin_255:

I say get what makes you happy, my biggest issue would be lack of service, if you must have the volvo go for the ISX, if you break down at least a Freighstaker dealer will work on it. If you have a vulva motor they will let you ride the hook to the nearest vulva dealer, which are far and few between out west.

I test drove two Volvo trucks today, one with the Cummins ISX and one with the Volvo 465hp. Even though the Cummins was only 400hp it felt much more powerful than the Volvo engine on the bottom end. It also showed 7mpg where the Volvo engine showed 6.5mpg. I guess that settles it, I'm getting a Volvo truck with a Cummins engine. Thank you all for your input. Now I just have to find a company to work for..

Yeah, I would be worried about having a newer one with that Volvo Motor......Most all of the guys can work on my old Detroit............I got my truck(95) and trailer(2006) combo at such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. The guy that sold it too me was retiring and we have known him longer than I can remember.........My brother wanted me learning the business and how to drive in a cheaper and shorter truck.........then after a couple of years I plan on getting a Pete or KW.......Really like the 379 but may end up in a t600.......

It seems like most of the companies want their owner operators to have newer trucks. Thats why I'm going with an 05. Plus I'm trading in a dump truck that is worth as much as an 05. But next spring I'm going to look for a older Mack or Kenworth day cab with a wet kit. Right now I'm searching for a good company to work for as an owner operator.

Yeah, I run for my brother and as long as it can pass inspection and looks like its taken care of then he is happy.
