2005 Volvo VNL 630. Always had a rock steady 14.4 volts on the gauge when the truck was running. Now I'm bouncing around between 13 and as low as 11.7. Multimeter still shows a consistent 14.4 coming out of the alternator and pulled the batteries and had them checked and found to be good, 12.4 - 12.5.
So, now I'm assuming some type of wiring short or ground problem but the main cables going from the batteries to the starter seem to be good and tight, don't know where to go from here. Anyone run into something similar or have a suggestion? Thanks

Take a volt meter and check, turn on A/C, lights, etc. Alt. housing to engine , engine to frame, frame to cab, frame to - battery terminal. Jumper wire and + battery terminal to starter stud, starter stud to alt. stud, battery to fuse box supply etc. Check grounds in cab etc.

Thanks, I may have found it. The positive starter lug was not as tight as I originally thought. I got a few good ratchet turns on it. Seems like my fluctuations might be gone. Hoping that was it...
Edited to add: That was my problem, all is good now.Last edited: Jun 8, 2016
Bains, 04 LowMax and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
I had a truck try to go into a parallel dimension once, almost brand new truck. Stopped, no one that put it together at the yard ever thought to tighten the battery terminals or interlinks.

Clean and tide batt pols
Then check the tin cable at the altinator -
Here is my problem...
Vnl, when running with Ac on voltage drops to 13.3,when Acs off gets up to 13.9
I may shut the engine off and it won't start, then suddenly after couple minutes all is good.
Batteries, alternator checked,both fine.
Any ideas?
