Detroit named it a VPOD. What does Cummins call the comparable device on an ISX 870? It controls the turbo actuator.

It has an exhaust port to unload air pressure. How do I know if it's out of spec or just exhausting air during a normal cycle?

Are we talking an 07 or earlier Cummins ? I believe it's called the turbo actuator valve . Little red box , on the lower front left side of the engine ? It's electo/ air combo. How many miles since its been changed ? Read on here they can go bad at 300,000 mi. Or , last 800,000. Lot depends on the air supply to it .
You can take them apart , and rebuild them. Read where you'll play heck trying to find parts , though. Cummins doesn't make a rebuild kit for them , new is over $800.00 .
Place near Chicago rebuilds them . Costs $400.00 for one of theirs .
when are you hearing air out the exhaust port ? All the time , at idle , when ?

    Thanks for the reply.

It's an '05 ISX 870. It's well over 300k miles old. Fleet pride says it's a $1800 proposition to replace. Sounds awfully high to me. Any idea what that rebuild place is called near chi town?

At idle it's leaking out the exhaust port constantly, according to the shop. They've been wrong before so I wanted to understand how to determine failure before condemning the part (and lightening my wallet).

Hi. Yea,I hear you ! Fleetpride is wrong,if we are all talking the same part. It's a snap to change out , takes maybe a half hour , if you're careful. Do you have an air dryer ,and do you change the filters regularly ? That alone can kill this part ! It needs clean, dry air. PM me , I'll look up the place in Illinois I got mine from. Send pics , also . I wouldn't want you to buy the wrong part !
It shouldn't leak air , at idle, unless your air pressure is Way above normal. Mine is just under 130 lbs.
My advise : check it yourself. See if you can hear anything. What I've learned ,on these forums , it's not so much a leak at idle , though that's bad enough , it's a leak when you're going down the road , that's the real problem. That said , if its leaking at idle , it may need to be replaced.
Want to be Sure we're talking the same part.
Takes a 10 mm an 11/16 , maybe a 9/16ths,too. Be careful with the air lines , in and out . Any dirt , can ruin a new one real quick. Not to mention a turbo.

New air dryer, and the cartridge is replaced twice a year. Air pressure is OK. Fleet pride says the replacement is expensive, not the labor. If you would drop that name on me I will have them ensure it's the correct replacement before ordering it. Maybe post it on this thread so others can enjoy the savings too.

Thanks again for your input... sounds like it might save me big money.

Ok . Price for that part , at KW dealer ,is $859 . Don't know Fleetpride , but sounds like they're Proud of themselves.
Place in Palatine, Il. , that rebuilds these things , is AVI Electronics Corp. ph. Is 312-450-7788 . They have a web page , but you have to dig for it , on Google. Get the web page , you'll see it. I think all 2002-2006 used the same part. Cost is $360.00 , plus shipping. He says he'll give you back $60.00 , if you send your old one back , And its rebuildable . One year warranty.
Remember , anyone with a little skill can fix these things . Not much to em , if the switch works . I think just a strange o-ring or two , and a gasket. If you can find the o-ring. Someone has , that's for sure! Maybe $5.00 in parts , a little work , shazzam , you've rebuilt it !
I ordered one , and its working OK, it wasn't the problem , but I didn't know that until I installed a new one.
BTW , a good guy on this forum , in answer on a post I put up , put up a link to AVI's web page. You can find it , if you look . He gets the credit , or blame , not me. I can't link , sorry , my iPad wont copy it correctly , or I don't know how . Whatever.
    Hope this helps .
