W900L - Right tool for the job?

    Hello Kenworth owners. I've been a company driver for the last couple of years and am hoping to eventually make the move to being an owner operator and leasing on to Landstar in the not too distant future.

    My question to you is whether or not you think a W900L would be a good choice for what I want to do. I would be pulling a van, at least to start, and would probably be running an area going from Minnesota/Wisconsin and then down as far as Georgia or maybe even Jacksonville, FL. Then working my way west as far as Texas, and back up toward Chicago or home to Minnesota. I will avoid the Northeast at all costs.

    I could eventually make the move to flatbed or step deck, but will probably stick with a van at least until I get accustomed to all the changes associated with going from being a company driver to an owner operator.

    I've been thinking about spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $30,000-$40,000 for the truck. Would love to find a nice '05 or '06 (pre-emissions) with the studio sleeper and an APU (have a C-Pap machine) if possible.

    From what you stated,you will run a lot off miles.
    So i would look for something a little more aero.(plus a more aero model might be a little cheaper to buy)
    For example an KW Anteater.

    Not sure how many miles I will be running since I'm not with Landstar yet. I guess if I need to do a lot of long runs I can, but I've also heard that you can actually make more money doing some shorter runs. Time will tell I guess.

    Is an "anteater" a T800, the one with the sloped hood?

    First of all,get your financing in order. I was shocked when I went to go buy another truck,they asked all kinds of questions pertaining to my prior experience of being an O/O...ugh I was like..yeah yeah yeah,blah blah blah just submit the ppwk sugar,lets go. Lol

    If a W900 is what you want to drive, then get one. Nothing worse than driving something you don't like, trust me. If it doesn't matter to you, then buy whatever is cheap and gets good fuel mileage. I love my W900L, and if I couldn't have it anymore I would quit trucking in a heartbeat.

    try and deal with your local bank on financing your truck. a financing company that deals through a dealership will get you for a higher percentage rate than a local bank will. and a local bank loan will knock off some on the principle from the first payment on. where a financing company will just make you pay the interest the first few years before anything is put toward the principle.

    W900's are great trucks. Only catch is you will pay for the look. They're supposed to be the worst trucks for aerodynamics, so your fuel mileage will suffer. Instead of a 379, I bought a 387. More room, not as sharp as the 379 but it rides like a dream an I get 7.3mpg. But I do agree with the other poster, if its what you want then get it. You will spend endless hours in it so you better get one you love.

    Right now banks are leery on truck loans for startup O/O's , so have a good sized down payment + $ set aside for unforseen things until the loads start rolling in.

    As for a truck , just do not buy more truck than you need or can afford
